John Jay / CUNY financial aid

So I am really confused by the whole financial aid process at John Jay. I got accepted into their fall 2020 class but I need to know more about how much it will cost me to attend because I am out of state. I emailed the school and they told me that they won’t get back to me in terms of what financial aid and grants I am eligible for until April / May when the spring semester ends. That is so long from now and I need to know if I can afford to attend John Jay by May 1 so that I can respond to my other schools. Does anyone have experience with CUNY / John Jay in terms of getting their financial aid and grants as a freshman?

I don’t think the CUNY system provides much financial aid (beyond student loans) for OOS students.

Start by running the net price calculator (NPC) here: https://portal0.uapc.cuny.edu/uapc/public/fin_aid/financial_aid_estimator/FinAidEstimator.jsp

Have you completed your FAFSA? You will need your FAFSA EFC for the NPC. If you haven’t completed it, you should do that ASAP. Meanwhile, you can complete the fafsa4caster here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/spa/fafsa4c/#/landing

Is the NPC COA estimate affordable? Continue to follow up with the financial aid office. Providing FA information after May 1 is unacceptable, so continue to ask for the info.

Good luck.

Is there any way you can stop by the fin aid office in person? I don’t have experience with fin aid there but when my daughter was applying there for grad school a a few years ago, the employee support by phone was a joke. Among other incompetence, the school kept insisting that they needed a transmittal letter signed by an undergrad prof my daughter had elsewhere, despite the fact the prof had passed away after writing a letter of recommendation for her, and despite the fact my daughter gave the school a copy of the obituary!!
When I threatened to come in in person to straighten some of these isuses out, all of sudden things started to move in the right direction.
If you can’t, try and get to someone at a higher level in that office. Don’t give up, this place is a administrative nightmare!!

hey, i applied to john jay in late october 2019. still waiting for a decision. i was wondering when you got your acceptance letter? im hoping i get my decision before march, the wait is killing me??‍♂️

My son is a freshman at John Jay. One thing to remember is the housing expense. Their dorm is in the New Yorker Hotel and this charge is separate from their semester academic charge. I was told that it’s rare for housing to be covered by financial aid.

When and how did your son receive his financial aid? I have no idea when I will get mine and the wait is killing me because I need to financially plan right now to see if I can afford to attend next year.

I applied to John Jay in September and I got acceptance in early December. I have yet to receive an actual letter of acceptance but on my CUNY first account it says I have been admitted.

Call and email the financial aid office today and ask.
