John Lennon

John Lennon was killed 34 years ago today (I corrected it from “39 years ago” that I posted previously), when he was only 40 years old. Where were you when you heard? I was a college freshman. I was cutting something out of colored construction paper in the “smoker” (common area) on my friend’s dorm hallway. I remember thinking, “Well, it’s sad, but at least he had a long life!” Amazing how your perspective changes!

It was my LAST DAY of college. I was skipping graduation and bidding adieu to college life. I can remember watching the news as I was packing up my apartment. I remember it well.

I was also a freshman. I was in my room, probably pretending to study, and one of my roommates came in and told me. He was the kind of guy who would jerk my chain, so it took him a few minutes to convince me. I was a big fan (still am) so it really hit me hard. To this day, I cannot listen to “Beautiful Boy” without getting choked up.

John Lennon was killed 39 years ago today
It’s actually been 34 years.
This is from a tribute held on his birthday.

When we saw Paul McCartney last year, he spoke very movingly about George & John.

I think you meant that John Lennon was killed 34 years ago.

(For a second there, I felt even older than I usually do!)

At a Stevie Wonder concert. He announced it at the end of the show to the shocked audience. And then he performed several songs in JL’s memory. It was a beautiful and heartfelt tribute from one great artist to another.

I was a college senior and living off-campus, so we had the TV on to hear traffic and weather. I came out of the shower to hear “in My Life” and knew something had happened to one of the Beatles. I was a journalism student so naturally it was a topic in every class I had that day.

I was in my first year of grad school, studying for a final while DH was watching Monday Night Football. We heard it from Howard Cosell, and were in absolute shock.

Such a sad day. I’d just started a new job in Chicago and wished I had friends nearby that I could hang out with.

I was in my Junior year of college but living at home in NYC. I found out the next morning when I woke up and turned on the radio.

Ok, I could swear I was living in NYC when he was murdered but 39 years ago I would have still been in college in Colorado. so, I checked. It was 12/8/80 - 34 years ago.

I was in NY and for some reason, iirc, was watching a football game on TV and they broke in with the news.

edit: See others have already corrected the year.

I was a freshman in college and for some reason was sitting in the very large “salon” of Kinsolving Dorm, watching Monday Night Football. I remember them announcing it, and I was in total shock. My parents were very young when they had me, and they used to have literal “roll up the rug” parties where they and all their AF Officer couples friends would dance to the Beatles, so John Lennon was a part of my social consciousness from a very young age.

DH and I had recently moved into our house that we still live in right outside NYC. It was also my college roommate’s birthday and I had just spoken to her on the phone and turned on the TV to watch the news as DH was in our den watching Monday Night Football. The news was so shocking and so sad. I did have friends that spent part of the next few days standing outside the Dakota and in Central Park.

Oh, thanks for the correction! Ha, I didn’t follow my own rule and question the source that said it was 39 years ago!

OMG!! as my daughter would say. Nrdsb4, at that very moment, I was about a half block from you, in SRD! What a small world.

Were you a nursing student then? If so, I will have to PM you to see if you knew my college roommate.

^^^Maine, lol, no, I was a music major at the time, ended up getting an Education degree. Nursing came later.

I do remember that you once said that you lived in SRD. Lovely dorm, that was.

Why were so many of us watching football? I don’t even like football. Was there nothing else on TV?

^^^I love football, and liked it even in college. But I have no idea why I was down in the lobby of my dorm watching football, because I usually only watched the Longhorn games, or occasionally the Cowboys. I’m guessing I didn’t have a TV in my room and just came downstairs to see what was on and got caught up in the game which was already playing. And back in those days, I bet all we had access to was the 3 or 4 networks and public TV. I doubt we had cable in the dorm back in those days.

Also was watching Cosell and Monday Night Football in my dorm room. First announcement “…shooting at the Dakota apartment building.” Ten minutes later Howard Cosell made a second announcement; “…John Lennon is dead.”

I was in college in Manhattan, so we had coverage on TV essentially 24/7. Obviously it was a very sad and ghastly week in the city. I’ll never forget the sight of Ringo trying to push his way through the crowd the next day outside of the Dakota, as lunatic mourners were tearing at his scalp and clothes.

We didn’t have cable TV at the time, so with limited channels, football was the thing to watch on Monday nights.
