John Williams vs Ennio Morricone & Oscars

I personally found Ennio Morricone’s works more beautiful, inspiring, and original. La Califfa, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Budsy are some of my absolute favorites. But he never won an Oscar competitively and has been nominated only 5 times, whereas John Williams has won five times and has been nominated zillion times. I am not a musician, so I am interested in hearing from some of you, especially if you are knowledgeable and are musicians. Do you think Mr Morrcone’s nationality is a factor?

Not that I believe Oscars is a gold standard. I came from Hong Kong; so when I learned that The Departed won the Oscar, I found it ridiculous that the film it was adapted from (the majority of the plot was pretty much carbon copy), Infernal Affairs, didn’t even get nominated for Best Foreign Film. I read reviews and most that watched both preferred the original, despite the fact that some reviewers watched the original in subtitles. I definitely like the original much better. In general, how fair do you think of Oscars?

Also, some people (they seem to be musicians or music students) alleged that John Williams borrowed or even stole other people’s works. What’s your take on that? I googled if there’s similar allegation about Mr. Morricone and nothing came up.
