***JOHNS HOPKINS CLASS OF 2021 RD APPLICANT THREAD***

son accepted had his mon look at the letter saw $.067 postage. She opened and started crying.

D got accepted in engineering school. JHU is a great school but we have concerns about the safety around campus area and Baltimore in general. Anyone else has similar concerns or any information about this?

Am I the only one with a bad aid package? Will hopkins match better aid offers (I am just assuming that if i get into an ivy i’ll get a more reasonable award letter)?

Oh and hi! I think its the first time i’ve visited this thread!

@mdchang99 my aid package isn’t particularly good either–for example, I’d pay almost 18k less per year if I went to Vanderbilt instead of JHU. Waiting on Ivies tomorrow to see if I get even better aid there as well.

@Sukie679 My daughter has spent time on campus for her sport (week long programs) and campus is very safe. The security is very evident at all times of the day and night. Dorms have several checkpoints prior to entry. Hopkins is a huge presence in Baltimore as both a resource and an employer (think hospital etc). During orientation the students are actually walked around the perimeter of the campus and shown areas to avoid etc. It is an urban campus, no doubt, but Homewood is very safe.

@momoftwins2017 Thank you for your reply. I guess we will just wait for the orientation then.

@badyork, idk if you work for a competitor school, but your post seems particularly inflammatory.

As a current BA/MA student at JHU, I have plenty of experience living in Baltimore and with Homewood. Here is my take as someone with actual experience: Homewood is super safe, I currently live off campus and walk to school every day, I’ve never had a problem with theft or safety. Hopkins employs school patrol officers who ensure the safety of campus, as do most universities. Baltimore as a city is kind of rough, but there are really nice, safe areas too. The north perimeter of campus is Roland Park, which is probably one of the most beautiful neighborhoods I’ve ever seen, with massive houses and pedestrian safe streets. I personally have gone running in Roland Park at night and never felt unsafe. Here is a little about Roland Park: http://hub.jhu.edu/magazine/2014/fall/roland-park-papers-archives/

The southern perimeter of homewood is the BMA museum which provides another scenic border. I actually heard BMA houses the largest collection of Matisse work in the US, so I’d expect there is security there.

The east perimeter is a very popular off campus housing area where most frats and sororities are located. For that reason, there is increased patrol officers present. Additionally, there is a hospital, Medstar Union Memorial A hospital, across the street from campus which also ensures security.

The west perimeter is generally unexplored and is separated by Wyman Park and San Martin Drive.

Other safe areas of Baltimore include fells point, inner harbor, harbor east, Charles village…

Anyway, the main point is while some students have had issues in the past, Jhu is overall very safe, so don’t let a few instances distract you from what the school and Baltimore have to offer.

Accepted! What is SOHOP like?

@badyork goes to georgetown - i wouldn’t consider them a competitor to hopkins. They have a ways to go in rankings, student quality, department quality, etc etc.

And same, I had no issues with safety at Hopkins. There’s always security escorts on demand if you walk home super late from way off campus. But security presence is everywhere anyways.

Thank you all for the information!

This is a silly conversation, both schools are fabulous institutions. Why badyork would come to the jhu thread to make negative comments when he or she is from a different school is bewildering to me, but let’s not insult each other’s schools!

:)>-

@badyork says JHU has a ways to go in terms of undergraduate quality while comparing a rank 20 with a rank 10. BTW Parchment is a garbage site that doesn’t use verified data at all lol and told me i had a 90% chance of acceptance at GTown, 80% at Hopkins, and like 25%+ at all the ivies.
