I’m a 5-year BS/MS student at Johns Hopkins and I’m receiving my BS in Computer Science. I’m interested in all types of careers related to CS, so I particularly am looking towards a high paying job. I’ve heard that Cybersecurity fields are in demand but Google searches show an average of 90k salaries while software engineers are > 100k as starting salaries. Is information security even the right field for hacking/intrusion testing, and if so would it be more worth it to get a CS degree and keep other options open? I don’t want to limit other CS options by getting an Information Security masters.
There are a lot of 6 figure jobs in cyber security and there’s lots of software engineers earning less than $100k. It really depends more on where you end up working and how good you are than CS sub-discipline. I would recommend reading this, https://medium.com/@thegrugq/cyber-ignore-the-penetration-testers-900e76a49500#.49rszz4rp . It doesn’t have specific career advice, but does demonstrate how the cyber security game gets played out at the highest levels, and from that, you can think about what you really want to do.
