joint major

advantages and disadvantages of getting a joint degree as an undergrad, such as chemical engineering and material science and engineering in UCB.

Well, an advantage is that you get to study (and get credit for) both chemical engineering and materials science without having to complete both degrees independently. The less crucial classes (like the Bio 1A requirement for chemE) are eliminated in favor of basically just the core classes of each field.

But the downside is that you forfeit pretty much all your technical electives. You’ll be solid at the fundamentals of both mat sci and chemE, but it will be difficult to narrow your interests to one specific field/industry.

A disadvantage (vs. just chemE) is that you have to deal with the College of Engineering’s annoying humanities policies. That’s the main reason I never considered a joint major.

Also, keep in mind that there is a materials science concentration in just the chemE major as well, so you don’t NEED a joint major to study both fields.
