Joke gift for someone who turned down Harvard Law

Long-time friend of mine (late fifties in age) … South Side Chicago Irish Catholic, intellectually brilliant, also highly athletic. Naturally, he went to the only college for any self-respecting South Side Irish Catholic boy with those characteristics – Notre Dame – did brilliantly there, taught parochial school (what else?) for a few years and then went to business school in Chicago and entered the business world, where he’s had a great career and where I know him from. He’s a very cerebral-consultant type of person – deep and thoughtful, but with a great sense of humor. Think sort of New-Yorker-cartoon humor if that helps.

In any case, he revealed to me something that I hadn’t known – that he had applied to / gotten accepted to Harvard Law (the only law school he applied to) – but turned it down since he really didn’t want to be a lawyer, which caused family angst at the time but they all got over it

In any case, this is now a bit of a running joke between us. We sort of specialize in passing corny jokes / gifts back and forth, and so I’m interested in any thoughts on a corny / funny / ironic gift relating to this. I mean, I could go to an online Harvard bookstore and get a Harvard Law t-shirt or something, but the goal here is extreme cleverness.

Thoughts?

How about a burger flipper?

How about something from Legally Blonde since the main character actually somehow went to Harvard. It’s a stretch I know but about the only thing I can think of.

Argh! This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I’m looking for, but it’s sold out. [Harvard Law j/k T-Shirt - T-Shirt Deal - Tanga](Harvard Law j/k T-Shirt - Tanga)

How about this?

Maybe a framed judicial opinion from one of the Harvard Law Supreme Ct or 7th Circuit judges with a caption “This could have been you.”

Perhaps using that funny T-shirt around this:

For a shirt, what might work is an Occupy Harvard Law shirt, but with the WE ARE THE 6% on the back.

How about a framed photo of the Supreme Court with his head photoshopped in?

Ha, I like where you are all heading with this. A sense of humor is paramount in this response. Keep 'em coming!

I’m on a boring conference call, so this thread just inspired me to nose around amazon. There’s some lawyer joke stuff there - including “Law School in a Box”, which I just purchased for my older S (he just got into law school, and both parents are discouraging him from attending).

Thanks - I did look at some of that kind of stuff, but the joke really specifically has to be about Harvard Law school. The backstory is that another colleague of his brags to clients that “X got into Harvard Law school but didn’t go” (which is embarrassing and tacky and my friend knows it and would never say such a thing himself, but this other colleague is very bull-in-a-china-shop and loves to brag about other people’s credentials without realizing how crass he is). So the joke needs to play on that, if that makes sense.

When I was at Chicago law we had “wine mess” on Friday afternoons in the law school. One week during recruiting season (jobs) you could get a free glass for every rejection letter you brought. The rule was “Harvard Law letters don’t count, since we all have one!” (actually, I didn’t, since I was limited to Chicago at the time…)

I think I’m going to have a friend of mine who does this kind of thing make me up a t-shirt through Cafepress that looks like the Tanga one I put in post #4 (I called Tanga and it’s no longer available). But I loved all of your suggestions – helped me crystallize what I was looking for! Thanks!

Perhaps a photo of John Houseman as Prof. Kingsfield with Animated letter “What did you Say?” T-Shirt of mug.

How about finding someone who can draw a New Yorker-type cartoon depicting Harvard’s law school in the background and two men talking in front, with a caption like, “Some people needed to go there.”

Does he have a flagpole? If so, a Harvard Flag would be funny. Everyone in our neighborhood has a flagpoles and we all fly crazy flags…do neighborhoods even have flagpoles anymore?

Using “Harvard Law” as searchword, I see Ebay has lots of postcards for sale of the Harvard Law School Entrance - 3 arches.

You could print out some mapquest directions from his desk right to the entrance and staple that to the postcard, since obviously he just didn’t know how to get there or he would have gone.

As well, maybe there’s a way to add in the McDonald Golden Arches, the arch in St. Louis, and some Dr. Scholl’s arch supports to the presentation. A lot of people probably get lost trying to find the right arches.

That looks like a really simple design, you could probably have one made just like it for under $20 or $25.

Google “custom t shirts”, there are numerous companies that let you upload an image and make one shirt.

If you don’t want to do exactly the same design, you could do something like

Harvard Law*

in giant letters, and then in little tiny letters underneath have

j/k

Oh! I love it! I just gave this friend a New Yorker cartoon calendar for the holidays. Now I just need to find someone who can draw in that style …
