JOMO: the joy of missing out

Forget FOMO. Embrace JOMO to discover the joy of missing out.

I really like this concept of JOMO. I don’t use social media much. I used to have a Facebook account but I deleted it in the run up to the 2012 presidential election. I have Twitter and Instagram accounts so I can read tweet links in articles but don’t follow anyone and I follow a couple home decorating accounts and a local consignment shop but I do not post on my own accounts. No TikTok account either. Fortunately my kids are also minimal social media users. My friends and I have discussed for years how social media is a huge driver in the rise in the mental health issues plaguing younger people. I hope JOMO is something this cohort in particular will try to embrace in 2024 and beyond.

I was just listening to something on the radio about ways to be happier in 2024. Number one was to get off social media. I agree that it is extremely detrimental to mental health for many. I’m thankful that my kids aren’t into it.

I used to do Facebook…back when it was popular. But now it’s dead. It lost its charm when all of us young soccer parents got old. It’s kind of depressing seeing all these old people claiming to be friends I grew up with :joy:
