Jon Lester is pitching tonight

Jon Lester is pitching for the Red Sox, after undergoing cancer treatment the past year. It’s his first game back.

And got the W.

Yayyyy!
Go Sox!

Go anybody that has a chance to keep the damn yankees out of the series!

(even you stark raving sox fans)

Something we can agree on!

“Go anybody that has a chance to keep the damn yankees out of the series!”

Throughout my childhood I would have wholeheartedly agreed. My favorite pitcher was Frank Larry of the Detroit Tigers who was known as “the Yankee killer”. Then, after moving to Yankee territory, I went through a period of ambivalence about the Yankees and baseball in general.

However, in the last few years my son’s unbridled enthusiasm for the Yankees has been contagious and now the Yankees rule! While I have not yet adopted the natural hatred of all-things Boston that a true Yankee fan must have, I certainly appreciate the history and lore of the Yankees and am devastated that they are going to abandon the house that Ruth built after next season.

For those of you who are unconverted, all I can say is, “Come to the dark side. The evil empire beckons.”

See great article and great picture of welcome back sign:

Thanks for the link marite!

Sizemore hits a 2 run homer and then Lester comes back and strikes him out! It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. (I’m a pitcher’s mom…)

“And gone is the love of the actual sport of baseball, the strategies behind hit-and-runs, sac-bunts and the double-switch, now it’s all about a 9-inning home run derby and trying like hell to buy the series every year.”

The only problem with that statement is that the Yankees aren’t just a HR team and only rank 8th in that category. To say that they don’t use baseball strategy is to say that Joe Torre does not know how to manage. He uses all of the strategies of baseball - including being patient when batting and that a “walk is as good as a hit” - thus giving the Yankees the top on-base-percentage in baseball (of course, having the second highest batting average also helps in that regard).
