JPL interview

Hey Narek,
yea I really liked the whole day, all the managers i met were really cool. I was taken on mini tours by each manager of the building/department they manage once they were through talking to me and asking questions. From what I understood, since I interviewed with three sections inside 370, i might (in the best case scenario) get three different job offers, or two, or one… and then there is also the case that they wont make an offer.
I also was able to snag some info while talking to one of the HR ladies (which are really great IMO)… she said they hire around 160 new grads each year… and they have around 200 on-site interviews… u can do the math.

I like those odds  I have a good feeling about this, I hope we both get offers. Do you know from anyone about how much the offers are for an ECH at JPL from our background? I’m aero and you’re mechanical, so should be pretty similar.

If you guys dont mind, can you tell me what your academic credentials are? And how long did it take from you applying and then interviewing for the position?

NASA GRC has 25 positions but the recruiter told me they have over 4000 applicants. So I didnt bother applying.

To tell you the truth here is how it works:
For the most part JPL goes to college campuses that it recruits from (hey are sprinkled all over the country). The do an info-session on campus and allow for people to apply for an on-campus interview. They do a few days of on capus interviews and from there they pick a few to bring back to Pasadena. JPL does not take resumes from just anyone for a new hire position.
Some of the schools JPL visits (there are more but i dont know them all):
Georgia Tech
Cornell
Michigan
Stanford
Berkeley
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly SLO
( I think they go to USC and most of the Univ of California campuses)

I also applied online to NASA positions but i think it a black hole for the most part since there are thousands of applicants. One of the people being interviewed on that day had a professor who knew someone who worked there, so even though JPL did not come to his university, he got the interview through a connection.

I had an on campus interview, it lasted around 45-50 minutes, the interviewer had lots of questions about my work… he really liked my answers and questions so he recommended me to have an on-site interview. I go to Berkeley, Mechanical engineering undergraduate, with a decently good gpa, lots of hands on skills and experiences, good communications skills (so i hear)… i guess that sums up my credentials.

Thanks, unfortunately my school isnt on the radar for such companies. They come, advertise, refuse to take resumes and leave. They come once in a blue moon.

I had the exact same experience as Robbie in terms of info session / on campus interview / recommended for on lab. I have a 3.42 gpa but also have a lot of extra curricular activities, hands on experience, an internship, and I’m the president of AIAA this year. All that extra stuff helps a lot, so I suggest you get involved with it. Talking about projects you’ve worked on is what is going to show them you’re capable of doing work for them

They just called me and told me I didn’t get a job. Hope you had better luck.

Hey Narek,
sorry to hear that, I have yet to hear back from them. I am going to assume I will hear the same as you. Did they tell you that they might consider hiring at another time or if there were any next steps you could take? were you called back by HR or a manager?

I was called back by HR, I wouldn’t assume you will hear the same. It could be that they’re still considering you among others. They said that they will keep my resume on file and if something else pops up then they’ll let me know, but I have a feeling they say that to everyone.

Yeah, they called me with the same response as narek23. I guess they have many more people to choose from what people in HR told me. Oh well… there is a reason for everything.

Add HMC to that list. They are at every career fair and last year the 35x propulsion manager Tim O’Donnell personally came to HMC to do some interviews.

minor update:

so i received an email from a manager that interviewed me, and he told me that they will make offers around march/april. they will be holding interviews until that time and will not make any offers any time soon. So if you interview you will likely be told by HR that u are not getting an offer… but if they like you they might give you a call in spring once all interview are completed.

HR will not say this, on most occasions. they make it sound like its over, if they dont give you an instant offer. Cheers.

When did they tell you that if you have a masters or doctorate that you need to present your research? I’m flying out in a couple of days (and just got my masters) and no one (from JPL) has told me about that. Who do you present for?

normer:

I’m headed out to JPL in a few weeks, I’m finishing my PhD in May. How did the interview go? What sort of questions were asked, and were you asked to present your research? Thanks for the help if you have a chance to reply!

Has anyone who has interviewed at JPL in the 2009-2010 recruiting season heard back with an offer yet?

So far everyone I’ve contacted who interviewed, has not been given an offer.
I just want to know if anyone has heard back any positive news!

I’m an undergrad in Mechanical, interviewed in mid-december with the mechanical group but was called about a week later with the bad news.

My recruiter said “This has nothing to do with your qualifications but none of the sections that you interviewed with have any funding at the moment to bring anyone on.”

That may just be a bunch of smoke but who knows, they may actually have some budget problems.

that “no funding thing” is frightening…

Does anyone know how much JPL pays a new hire with a masters degree for computer science type stuff?

“Does anyone know how much JPL pays a new hire with a masters degree for computer science type stuff?”
70k-80k is likely. however, if you are taking a jpl job for the money i will personally come over there and drag you off the campus.

I think the email address is the biggest incentive really.

What’s wrong with asking how much the starting salary would be? I would presume he has other interviews/offers, and is trying to weigh his decision. JPL may be prestigious, but there’s no reason not to fully evaluate your options. No need to get in a hissy over your past company.
