June 2009 SAT Critical Reading

hmm idk, did you try googlebooks? you might be able to see it

Oh, good idea!

And when you search things on google – make sure you put + next to words you know. This was my query when I found the last article:

[Amazon.com: Development and Scope of Higher Education in the United States: Richard Hofstadter: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Development-Higher-Education-United-States/dp/0231019564/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244384001&sr=8-1)

I think Passage 2 is this one

Yeah. Google Books didn’t yield any of the key terms for the one I found.

hey btw, another question we haven’t addressed:

in the mystery books passage, was the answer to the question about miracle “wondrous quality”? the others were “undiscoverable secret” which seemed kind of weird to me, but the only other possibility

Oh, I vaguely remember that passage. What were some more details?

it was the one about the black writer and he said mystery books were “both a mystery and a miracle” and the question was: what is the miracle?

ya i put wondrous quality

Oh. I think I put wondrous quality, too.

Since I don’t feel like digging through 40+ pages of this thread, can anybody confirm the answer to that question about the mom in the spaceship/caravan story? Was it enigmatic or what?

yep, def. enigmatic

BTW: last question on the whole test?

Passage 1 was critical while Passage 2 was something i don’t remember right now?

I just remember saying the first one was critical…

thoughts??

The question that asked what the mystery meant in the black mans book passage…what did the mystery mean??? i put wondrous i think

when i started viewing this thread, i didn’t find any of the passages on my test that u guys r discussing… as i rummaged more, i felt so dizzy that i gave up on 24th page of this thread…
i had a passage on interview with james baldwin n an actress
n math was experimental section
pls tell me atleast one of u had passage on baldwin… pleaseeeeeeeee

was there a question about “hybrid” with the spanglish passage

this could be the book
[Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language by Ilan Stavans](http://www.harpercollins.com/books/9780060087760/Spanglish/index.aspx)

“But Spanish north of the Rio Grande has not spread in its pure Iberian form. On the contrary, a signature of the brewing “Latin Fever” that has swept the United States since the mid-1980s is the astonishing creative linguistic amalgam of tongues used by people of Hispanic descent, not only in major cities but in rural areas as well – neither Spanish nor English, but a hybrid, known only as Spanglish.”

I remember that being the passage exactly

http://www.cfr.org/content/publications/attachments/CORR_spring-summer_2000.pdf

go to page 28 and top of 29

awesome thanks!

btw, i don’t think we’ve talked about the first set of passages - the blogging ones. anyone remember any answers?

i do remember one: it was about how passage 1 would respond to passage 2 (i believe?) and the answer i think was “overstating the similarities between newspapers and blogs” or something along those lines

haha more questions:

the one that I posted about the monroes, what were the answer choices for the reasons why she was asking questions? i thought maybe one choice was something like “to show her doubts” or something?

what was the one thing that passage 1 had but not passage 2? I said the attitude of the students/behavior of the students?

what was the answer to the last question of the whole test - attitude of passage 1 and attitude of passage 2?

was the answer to one about the black author and his books something like “narrowly defined by experts?”
