junior girl/chance me

im in two aps this year: bio/comparative

3 APs next year:
bc calc (my school is extremely competitive for this class…they only took 15 students out of 400)
ap physics
ap stats
(some honors history/english)
gpa: 3.95
act: 31 (took it once…taking it again in june)

extracurricular: president of an ethnic club, band, xc and track, exec board of students against destructive decisions, model un, a bunch of others
service: doing habitat for humanity this summer

im one of the best girls at math in my school and i plan to enter into engineering or something math/science related in college…will that increase my chances of some top-notch school?

Being a girl interested in engineering will definitely help your chances. You could probably get into RPI/WPI relatively easily. As far as schools like MIT/Caltech, they already attract really bright, self-selecting girls who have awesome credentials in the Sciences. You would be less competitive at these schools.

Some schools to consider for math/science/engineering would be CMU, Brandies, Georgia Institute of Technology (really good school which is under-rated), Cornell, U of Illinois, and U of Maryland.

Like #1 Person mentioned, U of Illinois is also underrated but really great for engineering. For schools like MIT, you’ll need to bring up your SAT score and have significant accomplishments both in and outside of the classroom.

great GPA and a good ACT if you get in=t up to a 33 you should be a match for all the schools on your list

what are the schools on his/her list?

If you define top-notch as the usual HYP + SMC, a higher ACT would be good. I can’t judge your extracurriculars that well…can you elaborate beyond “a bunch of others”? Including your previous classes (for junior at least) would help.

With what you have now…consider USC, RPI, probably CMU too (they’re fairly dedicated to getting more girls in engineering fields).

Get that ACT up for top schools. Being a girl interested in science will certainly help, but it’s unlikely to make up for iffy scores. What it can do is cinch admission for an already outstanding candidate who might get lost amongst, say, all the female prospective English majors without an interest in science.
