If you want to get your ducks (or ECs) in row for BS/MD application, you need to be absolutely on top of this stuff. You need to know when the volunteer slots open and be first in line for them.
Also, you can do more than ONE activity during the summer. It’s usually not an either just X or just Y situation. I know D2 volunteered afternoons in Child’s Life and worked as a day camp counselor in the mornings and as an activities assistant at the local children’s science museum on weekends. She had lots of balls in the air–and managed not to drop any of them. It was great training for a future physician.
Pre-meds, med students and physicians all have to be pro at multi-tasking. (All healthcare providers do.)
I would go to UGA as premed, not GT. GT is primarily engineering school. I personally know several people who had very limited options due to GPA from GT. Med schools do not care where you graduated from. They care only about GPA.
Yeah, I know, but to be honest I think I have a good enough work ethic to take the GT classes. I should have most of my credits coming out of high school so we’ll see. I don’t plan on going to UGA though because I’m kind of on the fence between Biology and Biomedical Engineering, with the latter being excellent at GT.
Update: I’ve gotten some quality ecs to put on there thankfully. No wet lab research, maybe I can get one for the school year, but I doubt it’ll make a big difference there.
I am now stuck on what bsmds to apply to. I don’t really want to shotgun as I have a “go big or go home” sentiment right now. In other words I don’t want to commit to an oos bsmd unless its worth the price, especially due to excellent alternative in state (GT). Now I need advice as to schools I should apply to and schools I should avoid. So far I have:
Baylor BSMD
Brown PLME
Pitt GAP
CWRU BSMD
OU BSMD
UAB BSMD (Considered as In-State student)
GT
Probably going to apply as Biology or Biochemistry, I will be looking into Bio/Chem Engineering as someone told me to look into that as well.
I’ll let others respond about the BS/MD chances. They are so competitive I can’t even try.
I do encourage you to apply to both GT and UGA in the early admission round. If you get in GT, you can immediately drop UGA from your mind, but it’s better to have a couple affordable options. I would also add a couple schools offering NM full rides.
I do think GT is a likely/target for you because of distance math, but I wouldn’t consider it a safety. As someone else mentioned, it is a difficult school for premeds, but since my premed D seriously considered it anyway I understand. She liked the kids and the campus (and in state cost).
Yea, I’m going to apply to UGA as well, I was undecided as to whether I was going to apply EA or RD but I think now its best to apply EA, with a lot of BSMDs during RD.
That’s a good plan. You’ll hear from UGA and GT by mid December. If you are accepted to both, stick with your current plan. If you are not, you can add additional safety/targets for the RD round.
