Junior still confused

Hi I’m a soon to be Junior in high school. During 7th grade I screwed up badly in math, which therefore i wasn’t able to take the higher math course in 8th grade, which then prevented me from doing Pre IB like everyone else. During my freshmen year i screwed up even worse, i never thought about college, but second semester of my sophomore year i realized that I’m gonna screw up even more, if i don’t change.

Sophomore grades
marching band A
concert band A
Geometry B
Chem B
German A
English A

I wasn’t in honors, but I did some leadership position .

Summer 2007
relay for life team captain

marching band - Section Leader for the Flutes

Although I am not perfect, and my grades are not grade, I guess thinking about going to Cambridge, or NYU is completely out of my reach right?

what do you guys think?

I think you should concentrate on getting decent grades and come back in a year.

You think if i do exceptionally well, and become involved in community service , and do something different, i’ll maybe have a very very slim chance?

you better study your XXX off in your Junior Year to show that you are consistently improving in academics.
Continue what you are doing as E/C, get some volunteer work or jobs to show that you actually do something outside of school. Colleges like improvements, so you better show it.

Best of luck to you

Your sophomore year grades are not bad at all. Continue to do well, get into honors courses in the subjects that you are good in (if your school has any), and do well on the SAT. Buy a book and study/practice for the SAT. It is too early to set your heart on specific schools, but I think that you are on track to get into a good four year college.

well i got into english 3 honors, and next summer i’m planning on doing AIF’s , anyone heard of it? www.summeradvantage.com , i don’t know if that will help , but you go to london, china, paris etc etc and study for four weeks and experience their culture, any opinions?

I agree with the people above. Work as hard as you can in your junior year. Pick up a few SAT books and get involved in school. It’s far to soon to tell your ‘chances’ and I wouldn’t say anything is definitely out of your league because you still have time. One year can be a huge deal in college admissions. Now is the time to show it. Trust me, it will definitely pay off later. Best of luck with your junior year.

really? i still have time. i always thought that since i didn’t take honors or aps, that i shouldn’t even think of high competitive universities, i.e. ivy leagues, privates. I am currently taking SAT classes and i will continue until i take the SAT.

Many schools discount/do not count freshman grades. I think Harvard does that at least. Anyway, if you get some good extra curriculars, get good grades and get a good SAT/ACT score you can get into a good college, even without a lot of honors or APs (though you should take some). Maybe not the Ivys or anything, but there are a LOT of good schools that don’t make the USNWR top 25 list.
