Junior w/2380 dreaming of HYPSM, ivies, other selectives

So I realized after typing this up that it’ll be pretty easy for anyone I know to identify me but, what do I care, they’re just numbers for goodness sake. (So, if you do identify me, just PM me or something, no need to make a big deal about it in the replies.)

Junior from midwest. Asian male, high income bracket, so no help there.
School type: small, private, decently well-represented at top schools. Does not rank.

TESTS
SAT: 2380 (780R, 800M, 800W) first try
ACT: will not take
SAT II: 730 BioM (ouch, took as freshman), 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 790 US History

GPA: Unweighted 4.13 (4 point scale, A+ = 4.33) weighted 4.44 (AP A+ = 4.83), so basically all A’s and A+'s and one A- I think. School doesn’t rank.

AP classes taken: (all other classes are honors when possible but I won’t list them)
9: Biology (5), Comp Sci A (5)
10: US History (5), Comp Sci AB (no more exam unfortunately)
11: Latin, Euro, Physics B, Calc AB, Literature (projected scores: all 5s or maybe one or two 4s)
12: English Language, Physics C, Statistics (also Multivariable Calc and Latin V which are post-AP level)

Awards:
• AP National Scholar
• NMSF (projected; I got a 237 PSAT)
• National Latin Exam Gold Medal 9 - 11 (plus some award for getting four gold medals in a row)
• Best Behavioral Science Project at State Science Fair, 9
• Some minor piano & vocal awards

ECs:
• Yearbook 10-12, co-editor-in-chief 12
• State’s Junior Classical League (organization for all Latin students in state, ~1000 students at yearly convention) – Regional Governor 11, 1st Vice President 12
• Class president 10
• Tennis & Cross Country 9 - 12, (Varsity Tennis 10-12)
• Political Club Founder & president 11-12
• Latin Club Councilor 11, President 12
•*Various club memberships, whatever.
• competitive piano and vocals for a while, choir vp 10 (no really impressive awards though)
• Independent science research 9th grade with AP bio teacher (probably in his rec.) Made state science fair, won award (detailed above). Also a research project for the summer before 12, but I don’t know how successful that will be (fingers crossed though) so we’ll just assume no major awards.

Work experience:
Research intern at orthopedic surgery practice, summer before 11
Research intern for bio prof at state flagship, summer before 12

Comm. service:
• Organized a bunch of service projects for state Junior Classical League, 10-12. (I am the officer in charge of service for the entire organization.)
•*Relay for life team captain.

Intended major(s): Biology, Classics(Latin)

School list:
Stanford
Yale
Harvard
MIT
Princeton
Dartmouth
Johns Hopkins
Northwestern
Wash U St Louis
Rice U
and state flagship as safety.

The way I see myself, my academics are nearly flawless and I have some pretty solid leadership and passion in ECs, but unfortunately my awards are kinda weak. But that’s just my own perspective, please provide your own input. (My biggest question to chancers: I know the top six schools on my list are a huge crapshoot. But what do you think the odds are that I’ll be accepted to at least one of them? I’ll probably apply early to one.)

Also, if you chance me and post a link to your own thread, I’ll give you some feedback in return. Thanks for looking.

HYPSM: Reach

Dartmouth: Slight Reach RD, Decent chances if you ED

Decent (or good) chances at Rice, NW and JHU

Wash U: ???

In the end, you will get into some great colleges.

Definitely in at Hopkins, Northwestern, Rice and State U [Flagship]. Most likely in at Wash U and Dartmouth. In terms of the rest, it’s so hard to predict, but I’ll say that you’d get into 2 out of the top 5 you have.

Thanks for the input guys. As far as making myself better for HYPSM, do you think there’s anything I can really do, or at this point should I just accept what I have and work on killer essays over the summer? (in addition to my research internship this summer of course)

“Most likely in at Wash U and Dartmouth.”
I disagree. Dartmouth(RD) is a reach school. Any school with below 10% admit rate is a reach school unless you have hooks.

Let me give you a real example about HYPSM.

My friend: Asian male with 2400 and 35 and 4.0UWGPA and 800-800-? and a national recognition.
Me: Asian male with 2380 (junior year) 35 ACT (sophomore) 3.96UWGPA, 800-800-(800)-780 and AIME(2) and decent ECs (I think).

Bad News: We were waitlisted and rejected from HYPSM.

Good News: My friend is attending an Ivy League school and I am attending UChicago.

Do your best and see what happens. That is all you can do.

Thanks for the personal example, 20more. Despite the fact that you and your friend were not accepted to HYPSM, that is heartening that you still got to go to some of the best schools in the world.

If you don’t get in at HYPSM, you’ll end up at an ivy or an ivy-caliber school. Don’t worry about it. It matters more what you make of college anyways. Example: I have a friend who graduated from Columbia with a B-/C+ average and can’t find any work… so yeah.

You have the stats to apply.

i think you’ve got a decent shot at all listed. but based on socioeconomics, race, and other things, the ivies will be a crapshoot for you. though i think you have a good chance.
WashU is notorious for waitlisting overqualified students. why? because they assume you’re applying to it as a safety school if you’re not ED and you’re overqualified. and they want a high yield of students.
try to demonstrate a lot of interest in your intended majors this summer, it counts for a lot. other than that you’re looking good. I don’t suppose your state fair was isef affiliated was it? because that looks great, isef is very well known. good luck with research over this summer. but siemens is the only competition that comes back in time to update your early colleges.
chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1307449-chances-cs-will-chance-back.html

Nice academics, solid EC leadership (class president = good, shows that you’re well-regarded in general by your peers.) Your awards are a bit weak, but overall, pretty good applicant. I’d say you’ll get into your bottom 5 for sure (maybe waitlisted at one for some stupid reason), pretty good chance at Dartmouth, and you’ll probably get into 1 or maybe 2 of HYPSM. If you win an award from your research this summer you’ll greatly increase your chances. Good luck!

Honestly, that’s pretty solid… You’ll probably make it into most of the colleges you listed, but I don’t guarantee anything for HYPS because it’s always really random… My friend had a 2400 (1 take), 4.0 UW, 5.0W, took 14APs, got all 5s, and still got rejected/waitlisted so… And no, she was really outgoing+good personality+ PHENOMENAL ARTIST! Idk how, but that shows that there’s never a guarantee :stuck_out_tongue:
I’d say Dartmouth and Cornell are pretty much guaranteed tho…

Chance me?

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbump

^that’s crazy. Dartmouth and Cornell CAS reject most 4.0/2400’s.

You definitely have the stats. I guess one thing that kind of goes without saying here is that after a certain point, these schools become a crapshoot. That being said, I think you have a great shot at Rice, Northwestern, and Johns Hopkins. I’m hesitant to chance you for the other ones because I don’t know as much about them, and their admissions can be kind of spotty. Good luck!

Chance back if you find the time?
