Juniors - which is more important?

Which plays a bigger role during admissions.

SAT subject test scores OR AP scores? Why?

Assume the below scenarios for a person with a very good GPA

A gets excellent subject test scores - all 800’s but for some reason gets a bad AP score in an intended major subject which happens to be her strongest subject right through (due to illness or bad luck or whatever on the AP test day). (assuming he wants to report all scores)

B gets all 5’s but a poor subject test score.

Who will stand a better chance?

In short, what is the impact of a real bad AP score on one’s most favourite/strong subject (intended major) when he/she has scored a perfect score in the SAT subject test.

Should she retake the AP in the senior year or just move on?

Depends on the school. Grades and SAT scores typically matter more for admissions, while AP scores typically matter more for credit and placement once the student arrives at the university.

AP scores do matter too because they indicate college level course work.

i had a friend who was valedictorian at my pretty competitive public with 530 kids in his class but he was terrible at standardized tests and still got waitlisted by harvard and accepted at upenn. his ap scores were 2 5s, 3 4s, and a 3. and 660, 730,800 (math 2) for subject tests.

@mathela

Does your friend have good ECs?

agree with ucbalumnus, some schools think SAT isn’t reliable

@compscigeek, yeah leadership ec’s and val were definitely his strength.

Most schools do not require you to turn in your AP scores during the admission process.

A lot of top schools do require you to have SAT or ACT + 2 subject tests (Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell etc).

Bump … Others. what do you think?

AP scores are self-report… so if there is a bad score, it doesn’t need to be reported. The AP scores are only for placement (and credit at some schools). So essentially the AP is “unnecessary”. When the subject tests are required, it is for admissions, and those scores are evaluated for admissions, they are not optional, nor do they have any impact in class placement or credit.

I don’t think valedictorian is an “EC.”
As for bad AP scores, you can always not submit them. I think you can do the same with all but 2 of your SAT subject tests for most schools
