jury duty? in college?

<p>My d, a freshman six hours away at school gets a Jury Duty summons for the city she is studying…students are not excempt? A. She has a full load of classes B. no transpertation to the court So she can postpone once butshe will still have a full load of classes no matter what while she is in that city…can she possibly get a transfer to our city in the summer?This is confusing!</p>

<p>I don’t know how other states handle these things, but my H has totally ignored every jury duty summons he has received for years (not saying I endorse this approach, but that’s his choice), and there were never any consequences.</p>

<p>If your D is in Maryland, Dreamer, we could have her trade identities with my D! Mine got summons in MA, where we live but is in school in Maryland and won’t be home until Christmas. She had to postpone it to January!</p>

<p>My daughter is Boston got a notice for May (after classes are over) - she postponed on-line until next year (after finals next April) hoping she can stay a few days at school after final next year to take care of it. She was not alone at least two others of her friends also got notices this year. They are definitely targeting college kids in Mass.</p>

<p>DD got a jury duty summons in CT when she was in college in CA. We wrote on it that she was a college student in another state. We never heard from them about it!</p>

<p>Now this year both DH and I both got called. Last time (dd was a 3 month old infant…and NO they did not excuse me) I was chosen for the jury.</p>

<p>Some California threads. Might vary by county here, but seems you are expected to reschedule once, to the timeframe you prefer. Ironically, some of the disappointed people are coming in for jury duty excuses!</p>

<p>I get that there may be little sympathy, but buisness owners ( i.e private medical practice) here are not exempt, stand to to lose thousands of dollars and dissapoint dozens of people, including their employees, for a few days of jury duty. </p>

<p>In our state you just need to write when the student will be available (summer) and provide dates. Work is not an excuse but being outside the state is.</p>

<p>I was called during my senior year in high school and had to postpone it til the summer. They wouldn’t let me postpone it after my summer school course at the CC. I was lucky in that I was called as a reserve juror so I only had to call the number in the morning and afternoon to see if I had to go in. My lecturer was very accommodating of allowing me to turn in assignments early for those two days just in case I had to go. I wasn’t called but I was one letter away from having to go to children’s court. In my state if enough jurors and reserved jurors don’t show up they will pull people off the street and yes they did this last semester. They will actually provide bus tickets to people who need to go but it wouldn’t have helped me anyway because no bus goes by my house and my course was in another county.</p>

<p>We’re in CA. D received a summons a few years ago right after she left for college 3 hours away. Did a bit of anonymous asking around including going to the court house. Suggestion…do NOT open letter, simply write on the outside "Not residing at this address - Return to Sender’. This is what the judges clerk suggested.</p>

<p>The sheriffs which did the security check when I entered the building and asked the reason for my visit suggested I simply ignore the notice. </p>

<p>Frankly, how would the court know the summons was ever received? Our county sends out 1,200 a WEEK!</p>

<p>Also, if possible, do not have your student register to vote or change their DMV address to reflect a college residence.</p>

<p>That said, after years of excusing myself because I was the primary childcare provider without alternate options - I now do my duty. … as will my kids when it won’t cost them a quarter or semesters worth of college.</p>

<p>In Georgia you can call and reschedule. I did that when the kids were younger. I wanted to make sure I had jury duty when school was in session. I’m not sure how you end up on the list here. I get called every couple of years. My husband so far hasn’t gotten a letter…</p>

<p>Thank you for all of this information. How can we postpone and ask to transfer to where she lives? I understand she was called to serve but does she have to get a hotel and fly back to her college city in order to do this? We are in California…

<p>OP, I have no idea how it works where you are, but in Sacramento, if you’re not chosen for a trial by the end of the first day, your service is over. If you have a similar system, here’s how a college student can make sure they don’t get chosen:</p>

<p>During jury selection, the judge asked prospective jurors to raise their hands if they wanted to serve on this jury. My D’s hand shot up. The judge asked her why, and she said, “I took a social justice class last semester, and I’m interested to see how the legal system works in real life.”</p>

<p>She was the first juror excused. :)</p>

<p>My son is in Massachusetts and received a jury duty notice for a date during the school year. He requested a postponement until summer. They never did contact him again, and it’s been two years now.</p>

<p>Our DS , permanent NJ resident, received notice for jury duty while in school in CT.
He responded that he could serve during summer and they took him up on the offer.
One day, done.</p>

<p>I was excused from jury duty while I was a fulltime college student. I told them I was a fulltime student away at college and that it would be a hardship and extreme inconvenience doing jury duty. I was asked to send in my current college course schedule and copy of my student ID. Hardship, and extreme inconvenience are legitimate excuses from jury duty in Florida per state statute.</p>

<p>Usually the “lists” the court has is from: Driver’s License, and Voter Registration. If that is the case where your D goes to school, that means she probably registered to vote based upon her school address. I personally believe that students should vote from their home address. They rarely have an interest in the area where they go to school.</p>

<p>If so, have her register from her home address, and then return the summons saying that she moved out of the area. If she ever gets a summons from home, then she can request a deferral for being off at college.</p>

<p>If she tells them that she is for the capital punishment for the minor crimes, I bet she will be dismissed quickly. I am sure, there are other outrageous answers to insure quick dismissal.</p>

<p>^ In Florida you’ll be excused from jury duty if you tell the judge you are AGAINST death penalty for minor crimes! Florida has some tough laws, and some hard-nosed prosecutors and judges.</p>
