^^ That’s a good idea.

The only time I got called for jury duty, I didn’t have to go. In Connecticut, you call the night before and they have a recorded message saying whether or not they’ll need you the next day. They did not need me. I haven’t gotten called since I’ve lived in Massachusetts.

I’m one of those horrible people that doesn’t want jury duty and tries to avoid it. I’m self-employed. I don’t work, it doesn’t get done, I don’t get paid. It’s so inefficient and wasteful. I’m not sure someone who really really doesn’t want to be there is going to be an impartial juror anyway.

S2 is a state trooper, S2 city officer, ex H city officer, SIL dispatcher. Small county with one Prosecutor. Hoping that works in my favor. Rent my office space from public defender in another county. Her words, “Cops don’t randomly pick innocent people up off the street and throw them in jail”. Being a PD has little to do with innocence and everything to do with getting them a plea agreement…until they are back in there. Same clientele…over and over and over…

Untrue. The Borough of Manhattan and Manhattan Island are NOT one and the same. The borough includes not only Manhattan Island, but some other islands and Marble Hill, which many people assume is in the Bronx.[Manhattan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Manhattan - Wikipedia)

Well, BC, you’re right. I don’t know for sure that my fellow jurors weren’t working on software in their heads while witnesses were testifying. I don’t know for sure that they weren’t sleeping with their eyes open. I DO know that no one was checking email, IM-ing, texting, working on a spreadsheet, surfing, or doing any of the various other distracting things that people can do on videoconferences.

I also know that once deliberations began, it was quite obvious that the jurors had closely followed the testimony. So I guess I can, after all, say that they weren’t working on software or sleeping.

Regarding body language – A witness’s demeanor is something that jurors are explicitly allowed to consider, to help them evaluate credibility.

Good point. Technically yes, some of little islands around Manhattan are part of the borough. Just brought back memories of the tram over to Roosevelt Island. And dumb question-- does anyone live on Randall’s island?

My son was called to serve on a jury this spring while a senior in high school. This is in California. I called the court and was told to postpone, but postponements must be for six to twelve months, so summer was not an option. As he had not yet chosen a college, we couldn’t know when his breaks would be in order to choose a date on which he could serve. The advice I received was excellent: “Well postpone him to Monday, Dec. 23.”

Perfect! Regardless of what school he chose, he was certain to be home by the 23rd. Additionally, he is unlikely to have to serve because very few cases go to trial Christmas week.

I had jury duty for Dec 31st last year. We were all dismissed by lunch time as the case settled.

A year or two ago I got jury duty summonses for both state court and federal court, for the same exact week! I ended up being able to postpone the federal court summons, but I went to the state court. As a prospective juror, I sat in the courtroom watching the jury be selected. I was not interviewed, but maybe 60 others were. I had no opportunity to make inflammatory statements to get out earlier, and I didn’t see any evidence that the prospective jurors who did get interviewed were purposely making inflammatory statements. They appeared to be telling the truth. It might not be so easy to grandstand in front of a judge, when you are actually sitting there in front of a judge.

I served for two days and was, in the end, not selected. Because of that service, I didn’t have to do the jury service for the federal summons.

That’s funny, I had exactly the same experience a couple of years ago.
