Just a FYI on renter's insurance for dorm rooms

Our State Farm agent called on an unrelated matter and I said I would need a policy starting in August for D. She said that since it is not strictly a residence and only if they are on campus in a dorm our homeowner’s would cover everything. Just thought I would share the info.

Sorry- I’m confused. Parents’ homeowners insurance WILL cover on-campus dorm living? Or it won’t?

Thanks!

I know our Safeco policy does cover the dorm room. Always best to check with your own insurance to verify. And while you’re at it, check out any reductions on auto insurance if your college bound student will not be taking along a car. We caught a break there as the college student is classified as a part time driver. Again, though, that probably depends on where you live and what kind of insurance you have.

Although many homeowner’s policies will provide coverage for dorm room contents, usually such policies have a relatively high deductible. It is possible to buy dorm insurance with no deductible or a very small deductible (such as $25/$50) which is also very inexpensive – well under $150 for the year. I think for peace of mind you it is worth getting such policies. My d. had a cell phone stolen last year and her dorm policy would have covered most of the replacement cost – though it turned out that she was eligible for a free upgrade on the phone plan, so we didn’t bother with a claim.

Here’s a links for a dorm policy:

And a good article:

The good news is that the process for purchasing the policy is easy – usually just a short online form to complete and a payment that can be made by credit card. I’d go with a policy that is underwritten by a major firm. If you think your kid is also covered by the homeowner’s policy, then an amount of insurance that will meet the homeowner’s deductible may be enough – but I feel that I would want at least the full replacement cost of the computer, just to avoid the hassle of multiple claims.
