If you are offered at wait list position at UCLA or any school and have no desire to attend other than to see if you got accepted for kicks, DO NOT ACCEPT THE OFFER. You are taking someone else’s spot who really wants to go there! Keep this in mind folks, because you’ll change someone’s life for the better if said school is their top/dream/best option school.

I disagree with what you say. I know you’re trying to do everything you can to increase your chances of getting off the waitlist, but honestly, it’s all about luck right now. It won’t matter if people accept the waitlist knowing very well they won’t go there. The extra spots are going to get filled regardless. People can do what they want, but I would suggest that only people that have a good shot of getting in or got their decision really early to accept their offer.

I was waitlisted and I immediately rejected their offer. Not because I wouldn’t want to go to UCLA, but because I knew I wasn’t going to get off it. No matter how UCLA does their waitlist, I was somewhere near the middle of it. On average, 8% make it off the waitlist. Do the math. I had no chance.

I’m not trying to improve my chances. People rarely think about this when they accept the WL offer. It simply makes the process easier for admissions, and the wait shorter for those on the list who truly want to attend the school :)
