Just another chance me thread- bsmd/selective school

-Lived in rural areas for the majority of my life.
-Male.
-Indian.
-Junior
-Haven’t taken ACT yet, but I got a 35 on the math and 30’s on the rest after taking a sparknotes test. I’m set on making a 34 on the real thing
-Music is a huge part of my life, have gotten several awards for playing guitar with several groups(I could go on, but then I’d be typing all night), have done lots of community service related to it.
-NHS
-Just got signed up for voluteering @ the hospital, plan to do 16hrs a week, 100+ hrs after 7 weeks.
-Plan on doing a high school medical program thing, applying in the summer.

As you can see, there are a lot things that still need to be done, so act as if I have completed all that is listed. Excuse the grammar errors. GPA related stuff will be in the next post~

GPA
-9th grade- One B first semester, 4.0 second.
-10th grade- 4.0 first semester, one B second.

Now it gets interesting:
I moved in between 10 and 11th grade, and the change was somewhat abrupt.
3 B’s first semester. Right now I’m in the second- definitely going to get a 4.0. The problem is that many of the classes I’m taking this year are not advanced. First, I moved from an IB school to an AP school, so no AP 9-10th grade, but honors. Now here’s my current courseload:
Trig (not even pre calc, I’m studying pre calc on my own)
Chem (again, regular placement)
AP Hist
AP Eng
Spanish, honors
And that’s it for core classes. I also have study hall (not my doing) and band.

To conclude, I went from 3.93 to 3.4, and when averaged my GPA is a 3.6 (hopefully these next semesters will raise it)

One more thing- I practically started the jazz program at my new school (leadership quality?) some other thing for essay/ec’s i guess

Please reply, i want some opinions on what else I need to do

I’m in the exact same situation as you (transfered IB–>AP after sophmore year). I bullied the counseling staff, however, so my classes here are plently challenging. I got to skip trig and go into Precalc from a reccomendation…

Since you’re already enrolled, there’s not much you can do about this year, but just try to be extremely forceful next time you’re signing up for classes (I plan on attending an elite university, I know I can handle it, put me in and see how it goes, etc.) Maybe look into summer school to fix the math problem? Another thing, I think is extremely important is I’m having my counselor write a letter to all of my schools next year explaining the transition ESPECIALLY class rank because, like you, I couldn’t take APs soph. year, and everyone else did, leaving me at a pitiful rank. If you have the same issue, or even just the scheduling issues, make sure you get your guidanc counselor to vouch for you, because I feel like it will sound more viable from an authority figure, if that makes sense.

Your EC’s look great, esp. starting the club and winning music awards, and your ACT score will probably help as well. Maybe look in to interning or doing a more selective summer acadamy if your summer is free.

I’d say you’re a long shot for the top top universities, but if things go well from here on out the top 30s would be a low reach/match and if your state has a fairly prestigious flagship school, you’ll be competitive (VA, TX, CA, etc.)

Goodluck!

One more thing- my class size is less than 40, and because I got 3 b’s last semester, I’m not even sure I’ll in the top 10 percent. I’m studying precalc now and getting permission to do calc next year. Also, I’m taking both organic and physics next year, and anatomy course during the summer. Is there any way for me to show my motivation to go to medicine for bs md programs to see? Another thing- i was reading about top tier (ivy) schools and saw that many of the musicians there were part of the Grammy national band or something equally prestigious. If I’m able to get into that band, would that counteract all the stuff not going for me? It’s the most prestigious thing for a young musician to do (aside from actually becoming a billboard artist); the equivalent of winning one of those intel/cisco national competitions.

Would you say that i could get into cornell? My bro got into washu and his app wasnt exemplary
