One deceased, suspect on the run. No word on connection to the university but students were told to shelter in place.

One person is dead after a shooting at the University of Utah.

Officials are advising that the public “shelter in place” while police search for a male suspect east of Mario Capecchi Drive — near Red Butte Canyon and the medical complex on the east side of campus.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Brandon Shearer told The Salt Lake Tribune that “one person is confirmed deceased.”

The victim was shot and killed in a vehicle near the mouth of the canyon, according to officials.

Salt Lake City Police say the suspect, still at large, is Austin Boutain. The 24-year-old white male has a teardrop tattoo on his face and was wearing all-black clothing — a coat, jeans and beanie.

Latest report is that the homicide appears to be during commission of a robbery, and that the suspect is also wanted in connection with a different homicide in Golden, CO, according to http://fox13now.com/2017/10/30/shots-fired-at-university-of-utah/ .

Yeah, I try to remember that we are all humans, but, it is hard to find anything good about the suspect. At least he turned himself into authorities—by walking into a public library and announcing who he was.

The young man he killed was from China. He was Mormon. He was killed in a car jacking, allegedly committed by the suspect. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-dead-shooting-university-utah-50826876

Note that murder during a robbery is a potential death penalty in both Utah and Colorado. Actual executions are rare in both states (7 in Utah since 1976, 1 in Colorado since 1976).

Looks from http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-dead-shooting-university-utah-50826876 like Boutain was in the library acting like anyone else there, when a librarian noticed him and called security. He surrendered to security when they approached. Also, he was believed to be driving a pickup truck registered to a man found dead in a trailer home in Colorado, though the truck has not been recovered, according to https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2017-10-31/the-latest-carjacking-by-university-of-utah-ends-in-death .
