Expecting my essays and recommendations to be great from both teachers and counselors.

I think most readers will agree that your chance of admission to Carleton is good.

Chances are FAIR to GOOD if you have a strong 1st semester SR year… at Williams I think you would be a definite accept “as is” though …

GOOD LUCK !!!

It’s a little hard to judge you as a sophopmore - a lot can happen in two years of high school. If you do end up pulling any of these scores on something outside of a practice test, you’ll basically look exactly like I did back when I applied (well, except you play trumpet). Word on the street is that Carleton admissions keep getting harder, but I’d like to think I’d still get in!

More important than your test scores, though, is how you sell yourself. This is true for many schools, but particularly true at Carleton. This is not a classic name-brand school, so fit is especially important. You still have some time - think carefully about what you are passionate about, and throw yourself into it. Setting yourself apart with a great narrative about the motivating force in your life (even if it’s something weird…especially if it’s something weird) will distinguish you from every other person who applies with great test scores, great grades, and a scattered pile of extracurriculars.

For example, I was passionate about biology, particularly ecology, so I talked my way into extra AP science classes - the administration was not a huge fan of me, but I ended up with some great teacher recommendations. I also volunteered through most of high school at a Butterfly House, so I wrote my essay about eating bugs there as part of a community outreach project. Narrative: I am a person who is driven by my love for science. Not to mention, that was actually how I wanted to spend my time - call me a naive optimist, but I’d like to think that admission reps can see through a groomed resume.

That being said…RELAX. It’s not too soon to be looking around and thinking, but unless you are graduating a year early or something, it is WAY too soon to worry about test scores! Take the time to enjoy the life that you’re living right now - when the time comes, that enthusiasm will shine through in the admissions process.
