We dropped off our DS at Pomona college this past Saturday. Great sunny day to help mitigate the sadness of seeing my first child leave home. The school put together a great day of activities. Got their at 8am and the upperclassmen volunteers waited in front of each dorm to assist with moving boxes into the dorm rooms! Incoming students and their parents had a different set of activities to do while having a few opportunities to meet for meals & a welcoming speech. The most memorable part for me was the last event of the day. The incoming kids marched from one part of the campus entrance through the quad and into the auditorium. The upper classmen cheered and serenaded them while handing them blue & white carnations. Very neat experience. As one Pomona parent warned me, the kids are so excited with this tradition that they don’t even look back to see their parents & families. Needless to say, it was a bittersweet moment and day. We are so happy to see our child begin a new chapter yet seeing DS leave home will be a big adjustment. My consolation prize was going crazy in the student store! Best wishes to all of you who will be sending your children off to college in the upcoming weeks.
Congrats, BBJr! It sounds like a great start to a wonderful adventure for both of you.
Congrats. The best is yet to come as the visits to the 5C are always memorable. Some fantastic years are ahead of you and your son.
Congratulations and all the best to you and your S.
We were there too, dropping off our D. The school did an very good job of organizing everything. Part of the program is directing the parents and students to meet back at the dorms at 4 pm and say your good-byes BEFORE the ceremony where the students “Enter the Gates.” We (me, husband and D) all got a bit teary saying good-bye. Now they’re off to their Orientation Adventure. There’s a nice (but short) video of the run through the Gates on the Pomona Facebook page.
Congrats.
When DS was in high school, that college was one in our “dream” (actually, any of the “WASP”, LOL.) We imagined at that time that if he did attend that school, how would we arrange the trip to and from the campus.
Love it! We don’t live far from there it’s a really special community. She’ll have so much to share with you at break! Can’t believe it’s been two yrs post launch for my DS, already time for Jr mom’s weekend for me. Congrats and thanks for sharing your experience!
Congrats!
But, why is it so hot there (especially August, September). :o(
Congrats! My daughter has many happy memories from Pomona and the rest of the consortium. @furrydog, the heat can be bad in late summer but the winters are awesome. January weather will definitely erase September memories.
Congrats! Tomorrow, I drop off my son at Harvey Mudd! Love the Claremont Colleges!
thanks for sharing, we bring our daughter to VT tomorrow …
@booboojr congrats to sending your child off to Pomona! My D is part of the orientation team and she had a great time. We did laugh about the difference between the move in between freshman and sophomore year-hey, where’s all the help that we had last year?! We have to move in everything ourselves?!
I vividly remember last year when my D and her roommate moved in at the same time and everything was piled in front of their dorm room. It was a massive pile of stuff, and I think every helper came by to take a picture. I believe that the school was going to use that picture for their “Do’s and Don’ts of Moving into Your Dorm Room” brochure. This year she brought a lot less; and it was so much easier to arrange her room.
And here’s a tip for next year, they didn’t clean out their little refrigerator very well at the end of the year, and when I went to clean it right before she moved in last week I almost gagged.
Welcome to the Sagehen family!
