a friend of mine was accepted ED at Brown. however, some personal issues may make it impossible for her to enroll. she’ll only know for sure in late july, hopefully before paying for the first semester, which is due august 1st.
she’s worried maybe brown will sue her or smthg if she chooses not to enroll, just a few days before the year starts and after sending all documentation needed.
what do you think? do you see any serious problems?

If the personal issue is something like wanting to go to her boyfriend’s college or to a college that she just got accepted to (because she didn’t withdraw her application as she should have after getting in ED to Brown, that won’t wash. Indeed, if she tries to back out for the latter type of reason, she’s likely to lose her acceptances to both colleges.

If the personal issue is something like wanting to be with a parent who has a documented major illness, that would be the type of excuse that would be acceptable.

forgot to mention she’s from romania…so it’s not as simple as wanting or not to go

The best thing is to ask Brown themselves. Call them up or email them or something.

My understanding of ED is that it’s not that you have to go to that college, it’s that you can’t go anywhere else. If she decided to stay in Romania and not go to college in the United States, I don’t think that Brown can do anything (and if they could, I sincerely doubt they care enough to sue her).
