Just how creative can I get with my college essay?

The topic I’m using entails listing a few steps of a process. Should I stick to paragraphs or can I split it up into sections? Basically it’s this:

I start off by doing blah blah blah

Or this:

Step 1: Blah Blah Blah
Then going on to explain the step in one or two sentences.

Sorry if this isn’t specific enough, I just don’t want to take too much, for lack of a better phrase, “poetic license” with my essay. Thank you!

As long as it’s not overly distracting, it’s fine.

Could be interesting. I like the idea of diving right into the subject.

If the process is interesting and catches their attention I doubt they’ll care about organization

(That being said, you may as well play it safe with paragraph format)

Hello!

You may want to first decide on the type of essay, following which you can decide on the style (here’s where you can get creative) of essay. There is narrative essay, descriptive essay, expository essay, etc.

Check out some [sample essays](http://www.studymode.com/resources/essays) before you begin, which will help you understand how to write and what to write.

Hope this helps. All the best!

Every single word you type should be with this in mind: You want to give them a reason to say yes. This isn’t a writing competition, or an OP Ed piece for the NY Times, or therapy. It’s an appeal for admission to a college.

You were understandably vague about your topic. But be careful not to use your essay to instruct the reader. Remember, you want them to say yes to offering you a spot in their school. You want them to get to know you, not to be instructed by you. It’s about your personality, not about how smart you are— there are other parts of the application that will showcase that.

Thank you all for the advice!

@simplycasperxp - Reread @bjkmom again. That advice is spot on. Imagine yourself reading something from a stranger and trying to decide if you want to spend the next four years with them.

Thanks digmedia!!
