Check your romaine lettuce!

Check your romaine lettuce!
I have to be honest, I really like romaine. I rarely buy it anymore!
Anything with those use by dates is long gone in the Thumper household. It’s November 23.
I’ve stopped buying romaine period. There are many other tasty lettuce varieties to buy.
I like the texture of romaine. But I also don’t want food poisoning/bacteria!
We (me) have been eating lots of kale - had bumper crops this year!
I believe those use by dates are for the salads containing romaine that have been recalled, not for heads of romaine. To be on the safe side, we tossed our romaine heads that were from Salinas.
I’m pretty sure I ate one of those salad kits. I didn’t get sick but it sure doesn’t help when the recall are for items that were sell by 11/1/2019 which have already been eaten just like @thumper1 stated.
I have never seen stickers “use by” on bags of romaine heads. They usually say “harvested on” date.
I just threw out the Costco romaine hearts purchased earlier this week. Harvested in Salinas on 11/10 but I just don’t want to risk it at all. Time to rethink my salad greens.
I’m a big fan of these companies and have been buying their lettuce pretty exclusively these days. They are local to me and their products are delicious.
I particularly love the Crisp baby lettuce, especially Little Leaf’s. Better alternative to romaine.

Check to see if their products are carried in your area if you live in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic areas.
Our local CSA sells salad greens grown all winter. We buy from them most of the time.
The romaine in my winter garden needs to grow a little faster. I’m not too far off from being able to avoid grocery store lettuce for a while.
In the meantime most of our lettuce in AZ comes from Yuma, which seems ok for the moment.
I heard about the recall but forgot about it. Home alone this weekend with D23 and she had plans with a friend last night. I decided when I dropped her off, I’d swing by Zoe’s Kitchen for one of their salads that I love. I’m rarely near that location. So you know how once you have it in your head something that you want to eat and you start looking forward to it? So imagine my disappointment when I get there and there’s a big sign taped to the door that they are not serving any salads, nor will there be any lettuce on menu items that normally come with it. ?
Ended up with a chicken kebab, which was good, but not what I had my heart set on all day!
With all these lettuce recalls, we have added a couple kinds of lettuce to our garden but unfortunately it’s only seasonal in our zone.
Our locally grown lettuce of all varieties have not had those issues. Unfortunately we have rat lungworms in HI, so you have to carefully inspect each piece and lead of raw produce VERY carefully. It has definitely reduced our consumption of raw greens in our household.
Recalls like this are a reason to buy local whenever possible. This type of contamination is uncommon in small producers, and when they do have a problem, the damage is limited. How on earth can lettuce that is weeks old have any remaining nutrients, even if it doesn’t come with a side of coliform?
Did you know if you keep the bottom of a head of (let’s say LOCAL) romaine and put it in shallow water (like a bowl), you get an ongoing supply of little romaine leaves?
