Just received first rejection, now panicking- chance me for northeastern schools?? (Providence, Etc)

Hi everyone!

So today I received my first decision letter, and unfortunately it was a rejection from UNC-Wilmington. I was a bit surprised, but not really bothered because I just applied for the heck of it. But now I’m panicking for the other schools that I really do care about (some with similar acceptance rates), so if anyone could chance me that’d be wonderful, because maybe I need to apply to more safeties?

My remaining schools are:
-Providence College top choice (EA) (legacy+alumni letter of rec.)
-Salve Regina Univeristy top (EA)
-Connecticut College reach, but top (RD)
-Stonehill College (EA)
-College of Charleston (EA)
-URI (EA)

STATS:
GPA: 87.6 UW, 89.5 W - I struggled with a serious health issue fresh/Soph year, and while my junior and senior averages were around 92, it was too late to pull up my overall GPA

ACT: 30 R, 23 M, 29 W, 26 S, 26 E -around a 27/28 superscored I believe? Didn’t study or get a tutor, bad idea on my part. Math is my worst subject

APs: AP Psych (5), AP English Lang. (4), AP Gov, AP English Lit

Honors: Honors Spanish I, Honors Spanish II, Honors English 9, Honors English 10

Intended major: Psychology at all schools except URI (marine bio)

NYS Regents: 99 US History, 98 English, 97 Biology, 98 Spanish 1, 92 Spanish 3 , 94 Earth Science

Background: White catholic female, but fluent in Spanish

Senior year schedule: AP English, AP Bio (dropped, but on my application when I applied- notified schools), AP Gov, Spanish 5, Computer Science, Creative Writing II, Marine Biology, Ceramics

EC’s:

-Social Studies NHS
-English NHS
-Spanish NHS
-Art NHS

  • Internship at middle school Special Ed Department
    -Peer 2 Peer club (given special ed buddy at school)
    -School literary magazine (both publishing my own writing and editing)
    -Writing articles/columns for a fairly popular online mental health organization
    -Art Club
    -School community service club
    -School peer leadership club (freshman leader, orientation help)
    -Working for a lawyer as a typist
    -Participating in an online counseling training program over the summer

Those aren’t all of them but are the most prominent ones.

Essay: Had it read over by two different essay readers and one English teacher, all said it was very good.

Recommendations: Very good from both AP Psych teacher and AP English teacher, Counselor rec is probably solid as well

I’m a little disheartened by my rejection from UNCW but I’m hoping I still have a chance somewhere.

Wow, have to say that I am surprised that you did not get into UNCW. I think you have a good shot at Providence and College of Charleston; even better chance at Salve Regina and Stonehill; don’t know anything about URI or Conn College so can’t comment.

I’m not sure why they rejected you. Do you need a lot of financial aid?

@citymama9 No, I actually didn’t even request any financial aid.

@LuckyCharms913 Yeah, admissions can be weird sometimes I guess! I knew it would be a little tougher out of state but I guess I was a bit off. Thank you :slight_smile:

You live in NY I assume? You have a shot at some schools on your list, but you may want to add a SUNY as an extra safety. Maybe one like New Paltz or Oneonta for example

I think you will get into all with the exception of Conn College, and perhaps College of Charleston

@citymama9 Yes, I’m from NY! I would consider a SUNY but I’m really not looking to stay in NY as my family is moving elsewhere and I’m not a huge fan of the lifestyle here.

@egrace14 Just be sure (POSITIVE) your parents are willing to shell out $60K a year for these colleges. If there is any doubt in your mind about that, apply to SUNY as a financial safety.

@suzyQ7 Yeah ofc, I’ve already discussed financial matters with them and I’m lucky that they’re willing/able to pay for me wherever I want to go. Thanks :slight_smile:

Apply to some SUNYs because your in-state tuition is based on where you went to High school. If you are interested in North Carolina look at UNC - Charlotte or East Carolina if you want to be on the coast, you should be able to get in those schools.

Id’ be very surprised if you did not get into PC, Stonehill and Salve. If you get into all of them, which will you choose? I love Providence and PC’s campus is nice but Newport is gorgeous too and the downtown area is a lot of fun!

I feel Providence will be close. Salve and Stonehill should be fine. Salve has an amazing campus on the cliff walk. Your days will be amazing studying by the ocean and taking walks. That school is very beautiful. Good Luck!

Stonehill is in the town where I grew up. It’s nice (the Sheep Pasture is a gorgeous farm across the street), but there isn’t a lot to do, and Boston is a bit of a hike to get in to. I’m not sure how much you are ok with being stuck on campus, but it’s a factor to consider unless you have a car and don’t mind driving to get to anything cultural.

I think you will be fine. If you are not an NC resident that would have played a big part with UNCW. UNC system universities as a whole are incredibly affordable and are growing in their application numbers. Even NC students are finding it hard to count on any of the schools as safeties.

Your stats, I think, should be fine for the list you have. If you are worried, look into a few more to apply to. It is not too late.
