just received notice from school about FAFSA

We filed the fafsa on 1-3-12 under the "will file" status, then we filed our taxes 2 weeks ago. A few days ago I updated the fafsa with all new and correct information under the "already filed" status and used the IRS link. Now, today I received an email from one of my daughters schools saying that we updated and corrected information about our available cash, savings and checking and that is not allowed. I thought I was suppose to update everything and submit a current and correct fafsa? The school wants me to send a signed letter stating that I did in fact make this correction. Is this going to affect my daughters aid at other schools? I;m not sure what happened. Is this a big no no? please help!

No, you only update the tax info. Asset info cannot be updated after the initial filing.

Go back to the FAFSA and correct the assets back to what you originally reported.

For the school that contacted you: Write the school to tell them you changed the original info in error and changed it back on (date).

thanks Kelsmom. I just went back to fafsa and entered the original numbers. I thought that I was to update everything on the fafsa as of the date that I filed it permanently. What would we do without you??? Thank you so much kelsmom

Wow, I did not know this wasn't allowed. When I initially filed the FAFSA, I put an incorrect amount for my parent's savings and had to go back and correct it (it increased). I still have not updated the tax info.

Should I leave it and wait? I'm calling the FAFSA helpline now.

Yes, if you entered incorrect info on the first fafsa, you need to correct it to what it should have been on that date.

Ok, I just got off the phone with them. Apparently, it's not allowed if you DECREASE the amount of your initial savings, but an increase is acceptable.

annoyingdad, the info that I entered on the first fafsa (will file status) was correct for that date, but when I updated the fafsa this last week I updated everything to the most current information possible and then submitted the fafsa (already filed status). I didnt know that I was not to do this. I was submitting updated information as of the exact date that I filed officially (already filed).

My response was to the post above mine.

oh, got it :)
