Just Shoes

I loved Pappagallo blossoms. So pretty. Went right along with the Bermuda bags - I probably still have mine around somewhere. And Frye boots from college - I still have them. Pretty dated style however, and my feet seem to have expanded.

Favorites? The pair of Jimmy Choo’s I wore to D’s wedding. Much higher heel than I ever wear but they were very, very comfortable. Ballet pink, not the nude shown here: https://us.jimmychoo.com/en/women/romy-85-ROMY85SUE.html

^beautiful!!!

I misplaced my Birkenstock Gizeh sandals. The ones that are 5 years old and perfectly broken in. The ones I can wear all day. Wish I remembered where I put them

I suspect you all are much more fashionable than I am, but it was nearing crunch time for D’s wedding. Every dress I sent her links to, she vetoed. We were up visiting her and making some final wedding decisions and stopped in Saks. I saw a dress I loved and just bought it, muttering something about asking forgiveness rather than permission. H and I were dressed very plainly, I had on very practical clothes and shoes for walking. We went on to Nordstrom because I had always dreamed of a pair of JC shoes. Clearly they did not think I was a serious customer and the look on the SA’s face was priceless when I got them. I got the platform sandals (I think that’s what you call them) when we were headed to St. Kitts. They were not nearly as comfortable but I love the color. A pick me up when I need it.

Fun shoe story. We’ve been doing a lot of cleaning and purging these last few months. H brought home two of his very old trophies to purge. When he first started teaching almost 30 years ago, he wanted trophies for the 4th and 5th grade classes with the fastest mile time. So, he took a pair of my old running shoes, spray painted them gold, and mounted them to stained wooden bases. They became the “golden shoe award.” He hasn’t used them in years, they look pretty tired now, but he wanted me to see them before they got trashed. Boy, have running shoes changed in 30 years!!!

I have bad feet. Really. They might actually be evil. I wish I could wear sexy shoes, but I hate pain worse than I hate being frumpy. For heels, I have to wear wedges or platforms because I cannot walk in anything that leaves my toes in an angry, snarling pile at the bottom of the shoe.

My nicest pair at the moment is a pair of Beautifeel sandals (stupid name, but really well made and every single strap is adjustable to accommodate bunions or random bony protuberances) that I bought for my daughter’s wedding 2 years ago. I walked for several miles in them in Honolulu last year and I did not say a single bad word when we got back to our hotel.

My current favorites- Rothy’s. Many of the styles, but especially the round toed flats and the points. I have, um, a lot of pairs and I wore them a lot. Now I don’t go anywhere…

Best memories- Brooks Hugger GT running shoes. Got me through some fast marathons back in the day.

Love my Frye boots. Have several pairs.

The Eileen Fisher sandals @BunsenBurner mentioned are also on my shelf and are great traveling shoes. You know, back when travel was a thing.

I really like Birkenstocks. My fleece lined ones have been a go-to item during this work from home stint.

I have never been able to wear very high heels, never mind stilettos. Not when I was 20 years old and 115 lbs. A job which had me on my feel a lot…well, comfort has always beat out avant garde style all the time.
I remember discovering Aerosoles many years back and always had good luck with them. My favorite sandals ever in my life were Aerosoles and I almost cried when they died. Other brands are comfy as well, but being retired, I don’t need a lot of shoes these days. I have old Nike cross trainers that I wear for walking.

“If the shoe fits…” I remember wearing ugly shoes- the ones available that fit my wide feet. Much of adulthood I wore regular, medium size 10’s- hard to come by.

Now I’m back to wide styles for my New Balance sneakers worn not very often here in Tampa.

Earth Origins regular width are my daily sandals when I go places (think groceries currently). I have men’s sliders for around the house- they don’t make good ones in women’s sizes and I do not tolerate anything between my toes (thongs back in the day- '60’s).

There are so many ridiculous shoes out there. I think most heels should be banned as well. I don’t get the appeal of tottering on anything or paying so much for a name, especially if the shoes are not even comfortable.

Oldest likely the black Rocport tie shoes I would wear for going out to eat in WI winters- now they work for H. (my 10 and his 8- he was 7 1/2).

No shoe shaming allowed here

:).

Best shoe memory - When I was in grade school, my mom really wanted me to cut my long hair and we agreed that in return I would get Dr. Scholl’s sandals - the original wooden ones that were really in at that time. What a disappointment for me - I wore them all summer but they were not very comfortable. And my short hair style was not good either.

Remember those Candie’s mules? I begged and begged my parents for those and they were so uncomfortable! I recall feeling the same about Dr. Scholl’s.

Most of the time you’ll find me wearing a pair of “dressy” New Balance or APL shoes or Frye. I have three pairs of Frye flats but I try to vary the heel height during the week. I don’t have to dress up for work and have been known to wear my Birkenstocks. I love shoes, bags and accessories. Mr. Sabaray thinks what I don’t spend on my clothing I more than make up for in those areas!

  • Newest? Not very new. I think I picked up a spare pair of Altra Lone Peak trail runners (for hiking) last year & tosses them in the closet for when my current pair have had it.
  • Oldest? Uhhh...I probably have some basic black pumps somewhere that have not seen the light of day for 20 years. If not, I think my snow boots are very old.

I tossed a pair of Enzo black flat sandals that I loved. Maybe they were too small? Miss those.

-Practical? Ha! Just about every pair of shoes I own now. Birkenstock professional clogs, All Birds wool loafers, Merrill Trail Gloves, the Altras mentioned above, Teva Hurricanes…

-Favorite? Hard to say. I love my Born knee high boots, for fall, my All Bird wool loafers year round, and I have a pair of Born platform heels for warm weather dressier occasions.

-Best Memory? Also hard to say. What popped into my head was Nine West cowboy booties. Those ankle height shorties with a pointed toe & they came in multiple colors & patterns. I had 2 pair, and I felt very fancy in those.

Count me in among those who begged for wood sole Dr Scholls & found them unwearable. I also remember my first pair of heels — Candies. Another win was convincing my mom to get me a pair of Adidas Stan Smiths.

I won’t wear uncomfortable shoes any longer, but when I was young, I’d shove my wide feet into anything fashionable & suffer in silence.
