what are the chances that a person applying would get in based on a 3.8 GPA, moderately tough classes and fairly high SAT scores?

whats taken into account during the application process?
when would be the best time to visit Upenn?

thanks for the input

well you’re on the right track. However, that info can’t predict anything. The vast majority of Penn’s applicants will have stats equivalent, if not better, than yours. You should start by taking the TOUGHEST course load possible, not just moderately tough. Then you need to make sure your SAT’s are good. Whats fairly high? Try to shoot for 700+ on everything. I’d say if you really want to get in, its your extracurriculars and experiences that are going to make you shine. That’s the way it is with any top school. After academics are on par, the question is Who stands out? Who’s unique? They have way to many applicants for the number of spots they can give.

Best of luck in getting in.

I took a moderately tough course load at my school (my opinion compared to my other high achieving peers), but got nearly perfect grades (3 Bs in 6 semesters, rest As). My SAT score was solid, but I didn’t like the fact that I didn’t break 700 in reading (not that I could anyway). I got into Penn over some of my classmates who look better number wise, and possibly EC wise too (EC strength varies based on what Penn is looking for and what the adcom reading your application likes). Really, it’s all how you present yourself (and a little luck at how the adcom perceives you).

If you want to visit Penn, do so soon because early/mid April are the Penn previews, so they go all out to attract the admitted students (because we only have a 50% yield rate for RD) so that is probably a bad time to visit because you won’t see the real Penn. I would visit this weekend if you can (seeing that you live in Jersey) or next fall (like mid September before you decide where to apply early).

Everything you tell them or your school tells them about you. It’s holistic.
