Hi all,
My son and my husband just visited College of Charleston & liked the campus. (Everything about the visit was the most expensive out of all the other schools they toured - comparing Alabama, Iowa, Ohio state - the Charleston visit cost easily double)
My son would be starting this fall as a freshman and is looking for a school with a lot of activities / clubs to join. He wants to be able to make friends without joining a Frat .
A campus with school spirit, good on campus food would be a plus.
Some questions are:
Can a male make friends without being in a frat?
How is the campus / dining hall food?
Is there a lot to do, good sense of community?
Nice professors?
How is the dorm situation - he would prefer not to have a high bunk bed
Thanks so much for any feedback!
Answers:
Can a male make friends without being in a frat? That depends on the individual student. Yes, there’s more females but there’s also The Citadel nearby (and many girls date Citadel guys).
How is the campus / dining hall food? Also student dependent. My daughter has had a meal plan all four years and while she eats home often, she doesn’t complain about the food. She did at first but that seemed to go away after the first semester. They seem to always have a salad bar and frozen treats - and then pasta/pizza and some basics. They also have a kosher dining restaurant. btw - it’s the same vendor/restaurants at Bama - like FreshFoods.
Is there a lot to do, good sense of community? You are smack in the tourist area - so yes there’s a lot to do. There’s also beaches - they require Ubers. There was more community with the last basketball coach (now at Louisville). There’s a very strong Hillel (if you are Jewish but even non-Jews go) or there are clubs - my daughter started a club to host refugees.
Professors - my daughter has had lunch with some and been to two profs homes for meals. I think if you try, they try.
Dorms - they’ve been redoing one a year but the ones not redone are not fit for humans. I don’t know if they have “high” bunk beds.
The COA at CofC is $52,512 for tuition, room, and board.. That’s this year. Not sure of your scholarship. You said small - so if it’s $5K, that’s $47,512 with a budget of up to $49K.
I don’t think the school is right for you. At some you can spend less than what the school shows for room and board. This is not one of them. You will spend decidedly more.
And given where you are, you will spend on entertainment, etc.
It’s why I sent other schools previously - and there’s more - in another thread.
Good luck
