<p>I’d always though it was meant to be a sort of universal compassion; though I could see where a little hate, hate, hate here and there could make compassion stand up and get noticed somewhat more when selectively applied against the dark background of anger.</p>
<p>the frightening aspect of this is that he is 50 years old with a Life-time appointment. Conservative agenda served in this country for 25 years in the future. Affirmative Action will end since there is a case making its way to the Supreme Court. Abortion Rights will return to the states which means that women will travel to pro-choice states by the plane loads to get abortions.</p>

<p>FountainSiren…again we meet and again you don’t understand what we oldies are saying. If you had lived in the 1950 and 60’s’s like us baby boomers you would understand. Make love, not war. Peace etc. The compassion was for the people. Governments do not always no best! We learned you Do not send children off to war if it is not worth dying for and if you don’t have to fight etc etc. What yulsie means is that conservatives are MEAN. The rules that conservatives want the court to make are not good for most people, just for corporations and rich white MEN. As long as they get the money, tax relief etc that they want, screw everyone else. Conserative Men running things means woman are, again, second class citizens. We lived through our breakthough and don’t want to go back. When I graduated from college you were supposed to start as a secretary first and then you got to move up.(if they let you.) Yes…that is our history. When we see men, men, men everywhere and woman acquising and taking the conservative line, we know we will lose the right to choose what our uterus is doing…or not. We lose wages, we lose rights. We lose the fight for the environment, we lose the fight in the courts, we lose the war to keep the middle class, we lose the fight to keep guns off the street, we lose the fight to protect the rules for the disabled…you haven’t seen anything yet. AND this court will last for years. We even lose the right to have our votes count. Remember the first bush non-election. You wait… You weren’t there you can not understand what it took to get our liberation and to start to moderate things, such as equal rights etc. Now. We can go out to work, not stay at home only because it is assumed we must. NOW we can choose to do whichever is best for OUR family…which may be non-tradional. People were shunned if they were not traditional before. Think Ingrid Bergman. Conservatives want to take us back to “traditional values.”…HELLO…what do you think that means??? They make the rules, the rest of us sit and just accept what that they and they and their religion says is best. They are just plain mean. Yulsie and I are right to be mad as hell. AND scared.</p>
<p>I’m not even close to being a liberal. I don’t believe in trickle-down, with grabbing a part of that economic gain to raise up the down-trodden. I don’t subscribe to the religion of economic growth. I don’t believe in “saving” the third world through government contracts to major corporations. I don’t believe in so-called “free trade” (doesn’t exist), or “free markets” (haven’t existed since 1776), regulated to shave off the rough edges. I don’t believe in the fiction of the corporation as a legal person. </p>
<p>As for most social issues, I believe I am a conservative - “a man’s home is his castle.” I don’t believe in gay marriage, because I don’t think government should be involved in “straight” marriage. I don’t think government should mess in abortion, because I see it is a health care issue between doctor and patient, and their Gods if they believe in one (or several). I believe in the separation of God(s) and state, as enshrined in the knowing and deliberate absence of God(s) in the Constitution. And, yes, I believe strongly in virtually every form of affirmative action - since the government has been and is continually supporting affirmative action for rich, white folks, I think it’s great when they can share even a little bit of it around - preferential option for the poor. I don’t believe the government should have the right to search my library records or seize information about my bookstore purchases. In most areas, I believe I am a conservative, when those who claim big C Conservatism are closer to Stalinists who want to run other people’s lives.</p>
<p>It is very funny to see the variouis postings related to how awful it will be to have a Supreme Court justice who strictly adheres to the Constitution as it was written. To all the Democrats, you need to remember. You lost! That is why the 2004 election was so important. Republicans who voted against John Kerry knew an appointment might occur, and that was one of the major reasons they came out in droves.</p>
<p>Actually, the constitution was written when we had slavery. Want to go back??? Were not all men created equal except for some men? and woman couldn’t vote. Do you really want to go back to THAT constituion or are you slightly glad we have a living constition that can change.</p>

<p>I am so disappointed that this is a country founded on individual’s rights and I am so afraid that those rights will slowly disappear because our leader - and his conservative groupies and lemmings - want to impose their own self-proclaimed “better” values on others. Did anyone hear Robert Bork on TV last night saying that a supreme court nominee, when asked their opinion on abortion, should say: “it should be overturned?” Well, I heard that and my stomach turned (spoken as the mother of a 19 year old daughter who, while I may personally agree or disagree on abortion, strongly believes that women should at least have the choice).</p>
<p>Frankly, I don’t trust Bush as far as I can throw him - and I think Rove is going to demonstrate that fear quite clearly. </p>

Don’t let me get started about what political and financial conditions are possible just a short piece down the road - e.g., the well-constructed, empty, concentration camps in Texas and other states, with a capacity of over 2 million complete with guards, silently awaiting the time when martial law is declared. When? When there are riots in the streets. One of the most important tipping point factors, as we all know, is the price of oil - the $64,000,000,000 question on that one is: “How high is too high before it all comes tumbling down?” And hey, guys, the oil is really running out (an open secret among all governments). And when it gets to be so openly-in-your-face that not even the ostriches can deny it, that’s when the wars will start (real wars, fighting over the diminishing pie for survival). </p>

<p>Oh, and to the young whipper-snapper(s) among us: Experience, age, intelligence, observation, education, and prescience prompt me to say “You Will See” - as long as you have even a small measure of empathy for your fellow human beings. The price being paid for this greed and power-madness is visible all around you, in the form of human suffering. </p>
<p>I think there is a course for us to be concerned when a group of people with a particular ideology tries to imposed their “moral”(forgetting that morality is relative) codes on everyone. We have progressed too far as a country for some few rich people to take us back. Roe vs Wade is not only about abortion, it was a precedent for a whole lot of privacy issues ruled by the court. The country will get really scary when it gets overturned because a lot of privacy issues will be next.</p>
