My D is considering living in the Kelley LLC freshman year. I understand there are many benefits to this. But can a current student or parent of a student comment on the time committment of living on the Kelley LLC? I understand there is a 1 credit class required, and some required meetings at night each week ( but we don’t know the specifics)? Can someone comment on the “required” activities and time involved. She has a small concern that there is alot of structure/required activities so there will not be alot of time for other non-business related activities/clubs.

Also, are all of the KLLC meetings/activities mandatory?

While I wait for my daughter to wake up on her last day home from winter break, I will answer your questions from a parent perspective, from what I recall my DD telling me…

KLLC students take a 1 credit hour class each semester. Looking at the grade distributions from 2012-13, nearly everyone gets A’s. There is some work involved in the class, but it is not a huge time commitment at all, at least for the first semester class.

I believe you are required to attend 10 KLLC activities. My guess is most students attend many more than the required 10. Some activities are in the evenings, some at other times, and some longer ones are worth 2 activities. Attending the minimum required activities is not a big time commitment at all, and chances are your daughter will want to attend more.

Will update later if sleepy daughter has anything to add :)

Thanks stbemtpynest. Any additional response (pro and con) from your D would be great. Any other responses are also appreciated.

She’s up! A few things she added…
Both required classes are just 8 weeks long, 1 first semester and 1 second semester. Many students take A100 (Basic Accounting) the other 8 weeks to balance out one semester.

The first semester class (T134) does have a few assignments that take some time, like preparing a time management plan, but there aren’t many assignments like that. The T134 classes are in McNutt Central and most are offered late afternoon or evening, so it’s convenient. DD said students provided feedback that some T134 assignments were too much work, so maybe they will fix that next year! She said some assignments were really worthwhile and others were busywork. She really liked her T134 instructor and met with her outside of class for general college/career advice. There is some overlap between T134 and Kelley Compass I. Don’t know anything about the 2nd semester class yet (T144 - KLLC Hot Topics) except the topics sound interesting. You choose one topic.

DD confirmed you are required to get 10 “activity points” within the first semester. There are MANY activities to choose from, so it is easy to complete this requirement. There are twice-weekly Professional Development seminars at 7-8 PM, plus other daytime, evening, weekday and weekend activity options, some which are worth more than 1 point. She said they were practically giving away activity points at the end of the semester, and attending the holiday dance was worth 3 points! There is no “activity point” requirement for 2nd semester and it sounds like there are fewer activities scheduled.

The only cons she came up with are the few T134 assignments that took some time, and the fact that her floor can sometimes be loud. But I think you can get that in any dorm.

Of course, anything can change next year, but after completing 1 semester in the KLLC my daughter says the time commitment is very manageable and well worth the benefits of the KLLC. Sorry for the novel, hope that helps!

Perfect! stbemptynest you are the go to person for IU and Kelley questions!

Racquetdad - have you decided Kelley is the school for your daughter? I tried to PM you, but I can’t. I’d like to know what swayed you there compared to other options. If you’d rather reply by PM, that would be great. My son is still waiting for UMd CP (I have ug and MBA from there) and he’s been awarded LOTS of merit money from Miami Ohio. So it may be a tough couple of months for us. Even with max OOS award, IU is still a LOT.

1214mom- No final decision yet. I think my D is deciding between IU and Ohio State. She is waiting to hear from UMCP the end of this month, but that school is in third place and fading in her eyes. No slight to UMCP- she did like it there when she visited. She should get some scholarship money from OSU, so the OOS cost to us for IU and OSU will be in the same ballpark, but IU will be more. Both of have highly regarded business schools. My D wants to end up in New York City or Chicago, and I think Kelley gives her a better chance at that than Fisher ( or UMCP).
I’v seen your posts about Miami (OH) vs UMCP and the costs. We had a similar issue with my S a few years ago. We told him up front what we could afford so if he applied to a school that was more than that he would need some merit money. A couple of his expensive schools did not give enough money, so they were out. There were two in the same affordable ballpark ( his 2nd and 3rd choices) so it was his decision. To me, if IU is affordable for you, even though it is more money than Miami or UMCP, then it comes down to where your S is more comfortable. It really helps to visit IU or OSU if you can. I don’t know anything about Miami business school, but you can’t go wrong attending IU, OSU, or UMCP.

Thanks… They are all great schools. IU for us will be Significantly more than other options, but if he really wants to go ther, we will likely pay. We plan to visit, but not until April, unless I change his mind about the Kelley direct admit thing in March. Is your daughter considering an honors option in addition to Kelley LLC?

Yes on the Honors as well as considering Kelley LLC.
