Kelly Admissions HELP

Hi guys. I’m currently a pre business student at IU. I started the year off really strong but I’m now worried about my chances for admission. I put my grades below.
BUS-A100 A
BUS-C104 A-
Stress Prevention A
ENG-W131- A
Learning Strat for Accounting- B+
ECON-B251 B-

As you can see I got a B- in Econ. I want to major in accounting at IU and I’m taking K201 and Kelley Compass next semester. My advisor told me they over admitted students this year and my chances are slim. Does anyone have any advice or tips for me. I’m currently part of Women in Accounting and signed up to be a peer tutor for A100. I rushed business frats in the fall but didn’t get a bid. I’m gonna try again in the spring to see if it will help my chances. If it helps I got extremely sick and was in the ER on antibiotics two days before my Econ final. Please let me know. I also put in transfer apps but I won’t hear back till the spring for those so I’m really stressing right now.

You can do accounting anywhere - and the where doesn’t matter - so that you are open to transferring, surely you’ll find a school. Make sure you apply to safeties. As an example, my nephew went to UNLV. They had all the big public firms recruiting.

As for Kelley, it sounds like you’ve heard directly from advising. Apply but assume their guidance will hold.

Best of luck.

The advisor at IU will be your best source of information. Hope things work out either at IU or elsewhere.

Being stressed won’t help you. I know the advice “don’t stress” isn’t very actionable, but it’s much more important to focus on doing well (regardless of your major, regardless of being “pre-anything”) than it is to stress about the things you can’t control like your past performance.

There are numerous on-ramps to a career in accounting, so if your stress is being driven by “OMG, I may have lost my chance” then you really can relax. Listen to your advisor, focus on picking a reasonable course load next semester, if thinking about Rush is stressing you out, drop that too.

Good luck.

Does membership in a business frat actually help gain admission to an accounting major? I’m sure that rushing interferes with the amount of time available to improve your grades.

I think that a more in depth conversation with your advisor is called for. Your goal is not to be an Accounting major. Your goal is to become a CPA. Can your advisor outline a path to getting there without a major in Accounting? How many accounting credits are needed to qualify for certification and an exam? How many accounting classes can you take with electives if you’re in a different business major? Can you take additional accounting classes in summers? IU has a 3+2 BA/MBA program in Data Analytics/Accounting. Is that an option that makes any sense to get you to the goal of becoming a CPA?

At this point, it doesn’t seem to me that you’ve exhausted your options even if your chances of getting into the Accounting major are “slim”. I’d explore those before doing anything else.
