Hello
I am a high school freshman. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer and study in the top universities like MIT, Georgia Tech and so forth.
Right now I am moving schools as a sophomore and I am stuck between Kent School and Episcopal High School. To be frank, I like the Episcopal High School more.
Buut… my mum just heard from someone that there are many future benefits(?) to staying at a school in New England. I’m currently in a boarding school in NH. Honestly, I don’t understand what her friend is referring to as I don’t see any of those benefits in my current school. In my family, I’m the only one living in America at the moment. Next year my sister will also move to America. It is an important decision, so I hope we make a wise decision. Are there really future benefits if you go to a school in New England?
Please don’t name Kent School’s pre-engineering program as the benefit. This summer I will be going to Kent school for its summer pre-engineering and interdisciplinary engineering program. Also, next year I will apply to the Stanford summer camp for college-level engineering courses.
With all due respect to this someone, I disagree with his/her premise. Actually I think attending a school in another part of the country that offers geographically and culturally differences vs. home base should be a seriously considered. The cultural opportunities in D.C. are endless. We live in NH. Both DS (junior) and DD (freshman) attend Episcopal High School. I cannot comment about the Kent School, but I can about EHS. It is a very tight knit community that provides endless opportunities. Any of the boarding schools mentioned on CC will provide you the opportunity to thrive and accumulate the knowledge to attend your dream schools. You control that outcome. Focus on which school feels like home and the rest will take care of itself. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about EHS.
New England does have a cachet regarding education, especially with people who live elsewhere. Surely it is not based on anything beyond an outdated commonplace, but make no mistake, the New England liberal arts college is a brand that sells, and the same thing can be said regarding boarding schools.
Regarding boarding schools, some people routinely ignore the opportunities to be found outside of New England, but that doesn’t mean you, or anyone, should. Kent’s a good school, but you like EHS more right now. Gotta ask the question: reeeeee-visit? (I take it that you visited both schools during the application process and that you are basing your preferences on those visits as of now.) If revisits are not possible, then ask yourself why you like EHS more, make sure those are good reasons based on something(s) you point to, and make your case.
My cousins went to Episcopal one liked it one hated it. I’m going to Kent next year
