Kentucky Derby 2018

That poor Irish horse was probably thinking this is nuts. What the hell am I running on?

I’m not a Baffert fan so I’m not thrilled tonight.

I’m not a big Baffert fan either, but Justify ran a great race. I was happy to see all the horses get round safely on such a sloppy track.

Most important thing: no horse or jockey dies!

For such a sloppy track, the race was surprisingly not sloppy!

Justify ran a terrific race. I hope they bring him to Del Mar this summer!

Yeah – but all the horses except Justify were the same color by the end.

Most of them were the same color at the start of the race. I was kind of surprised by that. There were a couple darker ones but most were chestnuts or bays this year.

That’s pretty typical for the color patterns of TBs. Even gray horses usually gray out later than 3 years of age, but some do it sooner.

You can usually tell 3 y.o.s are gray though. They don’t look bay or chestnut. I’ll bet the rain darkened them all out so that normal variations in color weren’t as noticeable.

There’s one sire, Tapit, whose offspring gray out super early. Some of them are almost snow white at 2.

The weather for the Preakness today was worse than the Kentucky Derby. Messy track and the fog was so thick, it was hard to see most of the race. But the winner is…

JUSTIFY! again!

We did catch that on TV - in between graduation things this weekend. Have to add me to those who doubt he can get the distance of the Belmont though. Four more strides - maybe less - and Bravazo would have had today’s race, with slower fractions and a slow time (albeit, the sloppy track).

Justify wins Belmont and the Triple Crown! <:-P

And made it look super easy, too. Amazing horse and jockey.

It was great!

That was a great race from a terrific team of horse and jockey. Loved the rapport that was so obvious between them.

Nothing prettier than a racehorse running full-stride! Congrats to a beautiful horse…

Happy for Mike Smith. He’s our fav jockey.

H didn’t win anything because he only bet trifectas but not the right one. :frowning:

Magnificent horse. He makes it look effortless almost.

Love that chestnut horse! Hope Baffert brings Justify to Del Mar this summer so we can see him.

Awesome race - well played by Mike Smith.

Does anyone else ponder what it would be like if we could have all of the Triple Crown winners race each other in some sort of fantasy world? I believe Secretariat still wins easily, but among the others? That would be a cool race! We could even include Alydar since it was only bad luck that put him in the same year as Affirmed.

Alydar is my favorite horse ever. I saw him win the Blue Grass at Keeneland and it was the only time that Mrs. Markey, his owner, was able to see him race live. Calumet is just down the road from Keeneland, so the track sent a car for her and Admiral Markey and drove them directly up to the rail to see the horse. They were well into their 80s and very frail. It was a sweet moment.

He was the better horse at stud compared to Affirmed, but did not live very long due to sketchy circumstances when Mrs. Markey’s family inherited the farm and got into financial difficulties.
