Kentucky Derby, anyone?

Just getting ready to drive to Louisville. Too bad the weather is so bad this weekend.

My H and I would really like to go someday. H will be rooting for Gormley since Victor Espinoza is the jockey and H always bets on him when we are at Del Mar!

I have been twice, once with great weather and once in the rain. It’s lots more fun in nice weather but I hope you have a great time no matter what it does. Please tell us you are not going to be in the infield!

No infield. Thanks for the tip on Gormley. I think Victor Espinoza won the Derby the last time I was here and then I happened to see him on Kelly Ripa’s show when I was in NYC a month later.

I live in KY and love the Derby. Was lucky to get to go in 1981, but happy to stay home and watch at this point. We have a small local track where we can bet and you don’t have deal with all the big crowd issues. Unfortunately, my college is holding graduation this afternoon with two back to back ceremonies during all the Derby coverage, so I’ll have to come home and pretend it’s live while I watch off the DVR tonight.
Hope you have some winners today, @toledo!

I follow only one sport. College football. I’m a fanatic about that sport. All other sports are just fillers until CFB rolls around again. However, having said that. I like having a change of pace now and then and I love how each sport dominates one part of the calendar. So, in a small way, I love the KD. I couldn’t tell you much about the horses, the jockeys or the odds without Google or TV commentators and I won’t watch because it is 5 hours of commercials and 2 minutes of action like almost all sports on TV are. Even CFB is nearly unwatchable and did you notice that Alabama coach Nick Saban will make $11.5 million this year to coach football? That is almost $1M a game and that is just his salary he gets paid plenty for endorsements also. It would be outrageous if anyone had the time or energy to care.

I hope, if you go, you enjoy the pageantry and event. Have fun! The weather does seem to be dark (watching on TV now just turned it on) but that is kind of normal for KY this time of year, right?

I don’t plan to watch it, but DH and always enjoy mint juleps on Derby Day. “Hey hon, my cup is a little low…”

Husband’s pick won. Too bad he didn’t have any money on it.

It seems a simple strategy… on a sloppy track, stay out in front or from behind another horse so mud doesn’t get splashed in your face. Am I right or am I Always Dreaming

^ Easier said than done I think.

Hahaha oh I agree. I was laughing because it was the only clean horse at the finish line.

I was at a party and put down $5 on Lookin for Lee. Came home with $71! First time in all the years I’ve gone to this event and have won anything.

I have a cousin in Louisville who has a party the week before the Derby so her friends can decide which of her three dozen hats to borrow.

My sister was there today; they allow some non-profit organizations to sell concessions as a fund raiser.

I won 4 whole dollars!

I was impressed with the comparatively inexperienced Battle of Midway, who refused to quit. Will be interested to see how he does down the road.

We’re back and ended up having a really good time. People watching is amazing. The weather actually cleared up for most of the day. We arrived at 11am and left at 7pm, making it a long day. There were around 10 races during that time, so we placed two $5 bets on each. The program told you the horses’ records in wet conditions, so I started out bidding based on that. It didn’t work, so I decided to pick a horse for it’s name. That paid off big time. I think I won $70 =D> on Limousine Liberal . I bet on Gormley in the Derby race, but my husband listened to a friend we were with, and put his $5 on Always Dreaming. He won $28 on that bet.
