I applied to other schools as well, if you could chance me for those - UIUC, UW Madison, Purdue, Case Western
- Illinois resident
- ACT 30
- GPA 3.6 UW, 3.8 W
- Unusual circumstances explain my low freshman GPA as well as lack of rigor during those years
- 6 honors and 1 AP course throughout HS (and I have a personal explanation for the lack of rigor)
- A bit of community service, but no sports, clubs, or leadership positions whatsoever. One of my biggest regrets :/ I heard that state schools don't care much about EC's?
- Top 25% of my class.
- Decent but not extraordinary common app essay. My essays for the other colleges are very strong.
- Strong recommendations, especially from counselor who knows me and my situation quite well and hopefully reflected on it in her letter.
- Senior year load: Honors Precalculus, Honors Physics, AP Computer Science. I know I am a year behind in the math/science area but that's only because of my unique circumstances
The best way to determine your chances is to google the Common Data Set for each of these schools and go to Section C. Compare your stats to those of the admitted students. The only other thing you can do at this point is make sure you’ve demonstrated interest to those schools who care about that.
Kenyon - Match
Grinnell - High match
UIUC - Low reach
UW Madison - High match
Purdue - Low reach
Case Western - Not sure, sorry
Your ACTs and ECs look good
Hopefully colleges’ll take into account whatever your situation is - I’m in the same spot with that but I only briefly mentioned it, though there’s a definite drop in my grades…best of luck!

“Your EC’s look good” I had a good chuckle at that because I have no EC’s

How are you coming up with this?
Hopeful, google the Common Data Set for each of these schools - the most recent year. Go to section C and compare your stats to those of the admitted students. You can easily chance yourself.
ECs are not important to state schools because they admit so many kids that they are assured of having enough people to play in the school band, act in the plays, put out the school paper. They like to see some engagement - it proves you can make social connections and won’t turn into a hermit - but they aren’t particular. Small schools need to make sure they have enough people with diverse interests to ensure that those roles are filled and, more importantly, that you are someone who will not just be a bystander, but rather a contributing member of the community. If however, you have major responsibilities like a job, childcare, a family with special needs, etc…you will be excused from the usual run of EC participation as long as the school knows about it.
