My son is deciding in the next few weeks between Kenyon and NYU. He will be majoring in Film and probably double majoring in something else. Obviously the schools are about as diametrically opposed in terms of location and size as you can get. We get that, and he sees pluses and minus to both and I can see him enjoying either location. He has visited Kenyon and seen the film production building and will get a look at NYU this weekend at their admitted students event. I believe he will follow through and do film, in some form, as a career. His interest is longstanding and he will work hard at it. Obviously NYU is well known for film and presents many opportunities for those that can navigate it. Kenyon’s film program is tiny by comparison but I could imagine a kid that puts lots of energy into film in a tiny program with less competition for attention and resources and less demands on his collaborators’ time actually learning more and coming out as well or better equipped. Obviously, it is mostly what you put into your experience matters and both are very good schools where he is likely to get a good education beyond the film classes. We don’t live in an area with a film industry so I am a little under informed about how much it matters from a career perspective. Obviously, as with all degrees that are not engineering or pre-med there is plenty of cultural narrative about the major having little practical value… with film I know there is talk that a fairly small percentage of majors actually end up working in the film industry long term. Any more informed opinions on the impact of the decision between NYU and Kenyon on career opportunities or recent first hand experiences with either program?
NYU if he’s serious about getting into the industry. You can compare outcomes and see how many film industry professionals Kenyon produces vs NYU.
Just to be clear…is he accepted to NYU Tisch, and it’s affordable? If so, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose NYU over Kenyon.
If both are affordable, if he is comfortable with the urban campus, and he has been accepted into Tisch, then I’d give the edge to NYU. But the right fit is important.
Congrats on the options!
I sent you a PM - don’t think the decision is that black and white and also depends on his interests - from production to business side to writing.
Yes. He is in to both. NYU is more expensive but it isn’t a big factor.
