ok everyone, what do you think is your biggest flaw in your application and the stand out statistic or essay?

me -> Flaw: weakest gpa BY FAR in this whole forum, Strength: National Merit Semi Finalist

Flaw: I don’t think that some of my essays are that great
Strength: Test scores? GPA? I don’t really know. Maybe shadowing doctors. Who knows…

Weakness: My ECs aren’t very unique…
Strength: I guess SATs and GPA, which are slightly above Emory’s average. Also, have shown a ton of interest and dedication to my main EC, which I will continue in college no matter where I go.

weakness: not that many ECs because I spent so much time on the few that did that i didn’t have time for a wide variety of activities, SAT only a 1450
stregnth: a very tough schedule and a 4.55w gpa, great recs, my essays are average

Weakness: 9th grade year, I didn’t list that many awards although I now realize I probably should’ve listen a few more, my short answer wasn’t that great, and I probably didn’t show enough leadership.

Strength: test scores, GPA after 9th grade, recommendations, work experience and diverse ECs.

just so everyone knows…emory doesn’t weight your GPA

weakness: lower GPA, especially from 9th, and maybe not great SAT, but they don’t look at that that much and i make up for it with my ACT
strengths: good recs, essays, and hard schedule at really competitive private school

i know its better they don’t weight cuz people drop significantly in the gpa area evening it out people with there 37.0 gpa, ■■■ no only 4 point scale lol

okay, well then unweighted i have a 4.0

i’ve enever been able to figure out my actual GPA, what would a 94 weighted be, and then 91-92 unweighted ?

all of your A’s convert to 4’s except if you got an A in an AP class then its a %, B’s become 3’s except AP B’s become 4’s and so forth, So you add up all of your grades by 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, then you divide the whole thing by the number of classes you’ve taken times 4. At least that is how my school does it!

Yeah i guess that’s how we do it too, whole grading system is ridiculous. If i were looking at apps i would consider everyone with a 3.2-3.7 and a 1300-1400, exactly equal and then put weight on EC’s, Recs, work experience and the essay. Really you can’t say that a person with a 1400 is better equipped, or more intelligent than someone with a 1350. Same thing goes for GPA’s, especially considering the varying ways teachers grade. For instance my Honors Calc class this year is a joke. I understand nothing, yet because he only assigns take home tests, i pulled a 98 for the first quater, and will most likely continue to get that BS grade for the rest of the year. I know there are seniors out there who are far more qualified than me getting b’s. It just goes to show how crazy the whole admissions process can make you when it comes to grades and SAT’s. Im done ranting, you won’t here from my incoherent ass until i update you on whether or not i got in. Good luck to everyone, and don’t get too stressed over it, you’ll most likely end up somewhere great with great people.

Also, I think they take into account your school. A 4.0 at one school might be a 3.5 at another.

yea definitely…a 3.6 at my school is probably equivalent to like a 4 something at a public school…i go to Benjamin, it’s like the 4th best private school in fla, if any of you have heard of it

I couldn’t agree more…SATs are so ridciulous now anyway because everyone gets tutoring…that bothers me sooo much. SATs are supposed to measure your natural potential not some tutoring guys potential, lol…like a bunch of my friends scored the same or lower than me on the PSATs in junior year and on a lot of practice tests and stuff then got tutoring and were all of the sudden like 100-150 point above me…that’s so stupid, it completely shows nothing about them, just about the tutor they had. I think tutoring should be like illegal for SATs, lol. SOrry I had to vent about this, it’s like my biggest pet peeve. When people boast about a 1500, which is really amazing that they could get that, but it was just tips and memorization from some guy that makes a living out of it. lol, any thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean. I never took any SAT prep courses , but everyone else that I know took the classes and i brought up their scores. But you have to understand that for a lot of people no matter how much tutoring and extra help they get it can only improve their score so much so it really doesn’t affect us that much if they feel they need to “cheat”

stgr11 I think you are just making excuses for your SAT scores… To be honest those ppl got those scores cos they are either brillant or they tried hard (wasted certain hours per week to obtain those scores they got) “cheating” is not the word to describe that, it would be more like devotion but who knows (After all… Emory doesnt look at SATs)

Actually I am quite proud of my SAT scores. They aren’t great but they are good enough for me. Also, I was referring more to people that don’t break 1000. At my school those are mainly the people that take prep courses and it doesn’t ususally help them that much. And as I was saying since they are scoring very low compared to emory standards that is why it doesn’t really matter to me, but of course this is just the situation at my school where the most of the students who get the really high scores don’t take prep classes or do anything like that

Just because you got a high score doesnt mean you took a prep course or prepared at all…I didnt prepare at all and i did OK.

that’s not what we were saying…i didnt have any prep and i did great for no prep…and yea a lot of people can just do amazingly without it, but a lot of people get the 1500s and 1400s with prep, most of those people would have gotten mid 1300s or low 1400s…and then they get ridiculous scores with tutoring…which is kind of stupid because it defeats the entire purpose of the test
