key west, fort jefferson visit?

My H and I are history buffs and would love to visit the Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson, but since we are from far away the idea of hauling camping gear to and from Key West and then on the day ferry is a no-go. I suppose we could just come and go with the hordes of day trippers, but would really like to experience the site longer term. Has anyone here ever visited with some kind of outfitter or tour group? Boating tours that anchor offshore? I’ve been searching online and not finding anything.
Thanks so much if you can help!

My then -girlfriend (now wife) and I visited Fort Jefferson during a weekend in Key West. approx. 20 years ago. We flew over in a 6 passenger float plane and stayed at the fort for several hours. The visit included a self-guided tour as well as snorkeling (which was spectacular!) Highly recommended.

Dragonmom,

I haven’t been there but your post made me check it out online. It looks very interesting and the snorkeling looks great.
