Kicked Out of School-Aid at a new school?

Basic question at the bottom of the page, if you do not want a story to read.

Greetings all. Sorry if I did not search the forums well enough if this has been asked already. Federal Financial Aid is confusing. So here we go.

I am 40, with 5 kids. Disabled American Veteran. Trying to better myself. Enrolled in online classes. Mandatory General Education courses were stupid and irrelevant. Really, 15 years of GE should be enough. Teachers we stupid. I know I sound arrogant. However, I know 17 languages, memorized hundreds of upper division university texts, and lived and worked in a variety of fields in 13 countries. I have 3 citizenships and 3 Permanent Residencies. Just to give a background. I am not a 17 year old kid. Or an old fool.

This is essentially what happened. I do not care to quibble on who was truly lacking in propriety or not. In the course of discussion in class about morals and ethics, and how power dictates such, I mentioned, from personal experience, that soldiers must follow orders, even if they are not legal. So this student went off saying that USA soldiers are NEVER given illegal orders, and I am a disgrace to the US flag and a disgrace to all the students, and I do not deserve the air I breathe, as it is FREE air I did not EARN, et cetera ad infinitum. I never said anything about America. So I attempted to engage him intellectually for an explanation of what he was proclaiming and said he never would, as I was worthless and undeserving of an explanation. This went on for about a week.

So I finally e-mailed him privately, as I thought the on-line forum was not appropriate for the discussion. He still went on. So I essentially told him to F-off, and leave me alone. He will avoid my posts, I will avoid his. This got me expelled from school 2 days before completing the semester! They filed a police report stating that I committed “terrorist threats”, “assault”, “special consideration for crimes on a school campus” (I am an online student that lives 1400 miles from campus! WTF?) and 20 other charges for using the F word.

So, harass and threaten someone for a week? A-OK. Say the F word? EXPELLED!!!

Anyhow, it turns out I did not even need the credits. My transfer university said I maxed out on the GED and the COMPASS. Apparently you cannot get higher than 100. The COMPASS was incredibly easy to get 100 on, and they seemed impressed. So the university took me as a freshman, as opposed to a transfer freshman. I am going to start any day now, though aid has not kicked in.

*****MY QUESTION: Since this other school expelled me for terrorism, and I received no credit for the entire semester, will that affect my aid at my new school? Thank you for taking the time to read, and Happy New Years!

It probably will because you were enrolled for credits that you did not complete This will affect your satisfactory academic progress. Also now there is also a limit on how much aid you can receive

My SAP is great, as I have never taken classes yet. And as I am a freshman, my past schooling is not an issue for enrollment, since I did not transfer.

Is there anything the previous school could to to cause trouble for me in regards to aid?

SAP is regulated differently at each school. For instance, if you just wanted the aid for the money, you could get your aid, drop out, and enroll in a different school and SAP will not be an issue, right? You could theoretically apply at a new school each semester or quarter and keep getting aid and never go to school. Is that right? That’s not what I am doing, I am simply using hyperbole to understand SAP and aid. Thanks.

This is confusing – were you taking the online courses to remedy some deficiency in your high school record and then you found out that these online courses weren’t needed? Then perhaps your new school might not learn about your issues at the old school if you were not taking college-level courses.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you.

I don’t think that works for federal aid. When you file the FAFSA the Education Department doesn’t just send you a check for the amount of aid that you are eligible for. What happens is that instead the aid is applied towards the directly-billed items for a specific school (tuition and fees, room and board). If there’s excess aid over those directly-billed amounts (but less than the cost of attendance for that school, which is almost always a higher number) then you get the excess amount as money that you can spend on books and other education items (or theoretically anything else you want).

I don’t know if dropping out and reenrolling at new schools every semester and quarter would actually prohibit you from qualifying for aid but I do believe that you wouldn’t actually receive any financial aid disbursements unless you were actually matriculated at a college. Again, the money isn’t given directly to you at the beginning of the semester; it’s given directly to the school and if there’s any left over after paying tuition, room, board, etc. then that excess will be sent to you.

Additionally, if you withdraw from school after federal aid has been disbursed to pay tuition, etc. on your behalf then you may have to repay back some or all of that aid.

I’m also not sure if any of that is really a SAP issue though. In the case that you outlined as an example, the person doing that wouldn’t receive any financial aid at all because they wouldn’t actually be a college student – they would basically just be someone who filled out the FAFSA and applied to college. That’s not really the same as someone who failed out of college or was expelled.
