I know we’re going to get some smart “frozen margarita” answers….
I was totally snookered into a sale at my local small grocery store - 6 Klondike bars for $3.99. Not a bad deal, and one of the choices was mini chip and while they have shrunk the size, IMO that was/is a good thing. I haven’t had a Klondike bar in AGES.
So got me thinking - your favorite ice cream/frozen treat as a kid….and now.
Stand outs for me as a kid (it’s hard to narrow down, ice cream is a fav treat) were ice cream bars or push-ups. I remember the ice cream man which we would VERY RARELY get a treat had some kind of strawberry crunch bar I always coveted.
These days if I’m thinking outside a small bowl of ice cream I’d have to go with one of the Häagen-Dazs bars with the crunchy stuff on the outside. And while I don’t want a push-up ( I think I remember trying one that one of my kids had years ago and it was NOT the same) I do like one of the orange creamsicle bars.
Have we talked about this recently? I’m feeling a bit of Deja vu?
If it’s a repeat, oh well, it’s ice cream season.
I listened to a podcast talking about ChocoTacos - I think they made an announcement that they were ending them - then they didn’t! You need to go to like a bodega to find one.
From the store - a tub of ice cream. Chocolate chip as a kid. As an adult, a more extensive range of acceptable flavors.
From an ice cream shop - milkshake. Friendly’s Fribble as a kid. And would still be my choice as an adult, but there are no Friendly’s here. So Shake shack it is
Kid? Probably any kind of ice cream I could get my hands on . If we are talking homemade, then my grandfather’s condensed milk cake! I was thinking about it recently and found a recipe that looks exactly the same as the one he used!
I had an upscale dessert one at a Mexican restaurant in Minneapolis in May. It was called a Chilango Choco Taco so I figured that they couldn’t use that name if it wasn’t actually an original. But I’m in no way going to seek out Choco Tacos! Like I need that sugar. Though, obviously, if one practically falls into my lap at a restaurant then I’ll jump.
Kid - Strawberry crunch ice cream pop (sometimes chocolate) at the corner store, after sis and I biked there a mile from home.
Adult - Gelato in Piazzo Narvono, Rome. (For the trip we took to Europe after the youngest graduated from college. We parents intended to pay for everything, but the kids suggested they should be pay for all ice cream / gelato.).
As an adult I prefer shakes or frappes. They are always coffee. There is a creamery with an ice cream shop 10 minutes south of my son’s university that makes the best coffee shake I’ve had. On my first visit I ordered a coffee shake thinking that description would cover it. Nope. The young woman asked me what type of ice cream I wanted. Huh? After a pause I said “coffee?” She was unfazed, and followed up by asking me what type off coffee I wanted. Confused, I said “decaf?” Off she went. When she came back she handed me the frozen nectar of the gods. Kline’s is the college town ice cream shop that’s been there for 70+ years, and it’s great, but I always take one trip down I-81 to Smiley’s for a coffee shake.
Omg I may have to change my answer from ice cream bar to ice cream sandwiches! My brother would get so mad at me because I would eat mine SOOOO slow using my tongue to lick the melting ice cream on the side - and then loving the soft chocolate top and bottom.
Funny that this article popped onto my feed today because I happened to have just purchased this ice cream and another Jeni’s chocolate ice cream just the other day. Chocolate ice cream is my all-time favorite with chocolate mousse close second.
ETA:
As a kid, I loved Carvel‘s chocolate brown bonnet. When I recently went up to the northeast to attend my college reunion, I made sure even though I was not late the least bit hungry, to get myself one
For those suggesting Friendly’s Fribble, I hear you but this was the Jim Dandy. My father would take us to Friendly’s after sports games but you could only get a Jim Dandy after a win. Sorry but I associate Fribbles with a loss😀
As a kid – Carvel vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles, Good Humor bar with crunchy outside and chocolate bar inside, Mint chocolate chip ice cream.
As an adult - Carvel vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles and mint chocolate chip ice cream still work. When I’m feeling more mature I love a nice sorbet.
I don’t recall eating a lot of frozen treats as a kid. I did occasionally eat ice cream. If given choice of flavors, I’d generally choose strawberry. I wouldn’t eat chocolate in isolation. I vaguely recall that I liked a Friendly’s vanilla base + peanutbutter/chocolate type mix.
As an adult I eat ice cream more regularly, which is the only frozen treat I eat regularly, choosing timing that aligns well with my workout goals. I find ice cream is more enjoyable when I vary the flavors and choose flavors based on how I feel at that time (low on glycogen, low on electrolytes, hot day, especially hungry, want to try something different, …) , so there is not a single favorite flavor. Some that I like are below.
Blueberry Oat Crumble – Unfortunately it has been discontinued, and nothing remotely similar is sold at the grocers where I shop.
Strawberry / Marionberry – One of the flavors with the highest variability between brands. My first choice is Tillamook. I wouldn’t eat strawberry in nearly all other brands.
Peanutbutter – Either Dreyers Extra Chocolate Peanutbutter, or Breyers Reese’s Peanut Butter (tastes like actual Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are mixed in). I would not buy Tillamook in this flavor.
Crunchy/Chunky Mix – I like Blue Bunny Bunny Tracks or similar type of vanilla base + peanutbutter + chocolate/fudge/brownies + nuts
