@LeastComplicated I am so sorry your daughter had to endure this. This thread has been so helpful though. I can’t imagine that she was walking around for a week with an 8+mm stone!
I am sorry to hear she felt worse after the procedure. I guess I thought once they did it the symptoms would all disappear.
Hope she is on the mend ASAP!
Thank you for the update! Sounds like a very rough go but so happy to hear that she’s finally feeling better!
Oh wow…guess I’m counting my blessings right now I’m able to pass 4- 8mm stones without going through that procedure. A few days of heavy duty drugs and a vomit or two and it’s been all over for me except for the trip to the ER for drugs and the hassle of straining my urine especially at work - ever try hiding a urine strainer on the way to the restroom? and the joy of seeing the freaking thing in the strainer. Honestly I’ve always been jealous of people who say they are going to go “get them blasted.” I have zero idea why no doc has ever sent me to be blasted. I guess my records show that I do pass them fairly quickly and it’s true apparently… by the time I’m in so much pain I can’t stand up, they are reallly low and almost out on the films and I’ve had at least one ER doc just look at me with wide open eyes of disbelief that they get as far as they due before I “present to the ER.” I’ll say a little prayer for faster recovery tonight for your D. I am so sorry she’s going through this…I truly am.
So sorry to read that your daughter is suffering. That doesn’t seem normal. Do whatever you can to get her stones analyzed so that she can adjust her diet. If caused by uric acid, then google “gout & foods to avoid”.
I know that I am repeating myself, but adequate daily intake of water is important to avoid formation of any future sizable kidney stones.
@Publisher Thank you! I think it is normal for some people. When I called the urologist he said that some people react like that. She’s very thin and has always had a very sensitive gag reflex so that probably doesn’t help either. He said it was a big stone for such a small body. I also read that the vomiting is due to nerve pathways being connected between the kidneys and the stomach:
"It’s common for people with a kidney stone to have nausea and vomiting (8).
These symptoms happen because of shared nerve connections between the kidneys and GI tract (9). Stones in the kidneys can trigger nerves in the GI tract, setting off an upset stomach."
I’m sure blasting a stone to bits is very irritating to the kidneys/ureter, as is inflammation and pressure because of a stone blocking the ureter - so that makes sense.
She has a follow up appt in about a week and a half (with an X-ray to take beforehand) to see how it’s progressing. We’re supposed to take the stone fragments with us to the appt so they can be analyzed. And I have been really pushing her to drink for the past couple of days since she’s been able to hold things down much better. I do think she’s finally on the mend, but it was a rough three days.
Thanks everyone for your kind words!
“What did they say at discharge? You say they rushed to discharge her. Did they give you any instructions on what to do if she had trouble?”
Yes, they gave us good directions on what to do and the surgeon came and talked to us afterwards. In addition, the urology group always has a Dr. on call to consult with. But I did really feel like they were rushing her out. She was groggy and and it took her a while to wake up and become coherent and the Nurse told her “If you can keep your eyes open and go to the bathroom, then you can go home.” I’m like, I don’t think you should be pushing a half unconscious kid to go to the bathroom and out the door!?"
By the time we left she was pretty much awake, but they didn’t keep her one minute longer than necessary.
@MaineLonghorn, the bill may not be that high if you have insurance with negotiated rates. If you have insurance with an 80-20% split until you meet the stopgap, you might not have to pay that whole $7k. Hope you get lucky.
We’ll see. I’m not hopeful. We’re already at around 2k OOP with appointments and tests.
@LeastComplicated: Ask your daughter’s doctor if drinking cranberry juice or a mixture of juices with cranberry juice is a good idea. May help if water intake becomes too bland.
I found a great organic blend. The label prominently displays “Organic Cranberry Blueberry” while the small print reveals that the mixture also includes apple juice & lemon juice. Manufacturer is R.W. Knudsen Family. 100% juice, no sugar added.
Hopefully this is diet related & can be avoided in the future.
