I remember the idyllic days of unsupervised play of my childhood. Sadly, our kids weren’t often out of my sight.

@oldmom4896 thanks for posting that! I heard someone talking about the article a couple of weeks ago, and it has sparked lots of thoughts for me. I like to think that my kids were relatively free-range, especially my oldest, who ran in the neighborhood woods with a pack of kids, but it was pretty tame compared to my own childhood. (I can still remember being called on the carpet by another mom for letting her daughter walk around our quiet suburban block while here on a playdate with my D2 - at about age 10.)

That reminds me of the " lord of the flies" backpacking trip my daughters middle school class took one November in the rain forest.
The supervising teacher hung way back & my daughter came home with stories about when her tent collapsed so she had to bunk with the boys & how all the wood was soaked & they couldn’t get a fire going until some reckless soul dumped lighter fluid on it.

They’ve since changed it to a " cold mountain" like journey.
:)

Maybe they don’t have mosquitos in Wales. All those tires sitting around would cause trouble here! And I don’t just mean from the safety police - it’s not as much fun to play if you’re covered in bites. A few bites are fine.

Mosquitos were just a part of summer when I was a kid.
