Kids are so polite today!

So I have a dweeby sense of humor, and my Halloween joke was to take the brussel sprouts I had not gotten around to cooking and bring those to the door when kids arrived, enjoy the look on their face for a moment, and then bring out the candy (which this year is Giant Size Pixy Stix).

First kid comes to the door. Vampire, about 12.

I bring out the bowl and yell “Brussel Sprouts”!

And he says, totally seriously, “Oh, thank you very much!” and reached for one.

Props to his parents for sure, but c’mon man…

Happy Halloween all.

Hysterical!! gonna try it with my carrots…

Lol!!! Too bad we don’t get trick or treaters! 'Cause I am making Brussel sprouts for dinner.

Love the above.

Trick or treating has begun. The last two youngish kids both said “Thank you” when I opened the door- the background parent and I laughed as I taught them to say the T or T phrase before getting the candy! So far big on the thanks from the 4- 7ish set.

“And he says, totally seriously, “Oh, thank you very much!” and reached for one.”

A, your little skit is hilarious. B, when I was a kid, I didn’t like chocolate, and I rarely ate any of my Halloween candy. The whole enterprise was about getting a bigger heap than my sisters. So anything you put in my bag would work for me!

Lots of adorable younger kids tonight and very few high schoolers. The little ones were adorable and yes, very polite. We were ready for 200 and only had about a hundred.this year. Now what to do with all these full size candy bars…

WE! Have had 6! That we did not expect. 4 teens and two little ones. Our hill is an awesome trek so they get handfuls.
That said, just ran out yesterday and bought some–Dark Hershey kisses and dark dove after the 3 musketeers are
gone. If somehow we hit the payload of kids I think I have a bunch of $1 and $5 bills hidden.

I just made about 4 dozen meatballs to freeze–maybe I should serve then and tell the kids they are eyeballs!

My favorite was a tiny boy, probably 3, who looked me in the eye, picked up a bag of peanut m&ms, and asked, “Peanut in this?” His pre-teen sister told him that it didn’t matter because she would trade with him. I dug for a peanut-free option in the bowl and got a nod from his parents. I offered it to him and told him there were no peanuts. His beaming smile was precious.

I had considered getting a couple small toys and putting up a teal pumpkin. Now that I know he’s in the neighborhood, I’ll do it next year.

Our completely unscientific study showed that peanut m&ms and kitkats were very popular, snickers were not.

Reminds me of the first time I took D2 at the age of three. First house I coach her on saying “T or T” and thank you. Her eyes got huge as she watched them drop candy in her bag. As we walked away and she looked in her bag, she exclaimed, “Mommy, this is a GOOD DEAL!” Yes, it is.

At my house, the Mike & Ike’s and the chocolate bars with Butterfingers pieces in them went first. Peanut M&Ms were more popular than plain. Reese’s Pieces were a slow mover.

LOL! I love it! We always have lots of people with dogs accompanying their kids and a few retired K-9 officers, so this year I set out a bowl of milk bones next to the candy. When a group arrived with a dog I held out both bowls and said they could take candy for themselves and a milkbone for the dog. The kids loved this idea, but each kid in the group took a milk bone and half of them put it in their candy bag. I’ll probably be reported on the neighborhood web site as the crazy lady who hands out dog treats instead of candy.

Wow! That was weird. I’d never seen anyone with a dog before–not that I remember, ever. But less than 5 minutes after reading your post, @momsquad , someone with a dog appeared at the door!

Yay! Finally getting trick or treaters!

We have had more this year than in the last 5 years combined. I think it might be that it is not raining!
If too many more arrive we will need to write checks :)) .
I have a hand sized Tarantula that is framed just above the doorbell. Gave it to S on his 12th Christmas.
He hated it. H and D hate it. I love it as do the tricker or treaters!

Someone brought a dog to school today - dressed as a bat.

Mr. B once “dressed” our dog for Halloween by securing large Fairy Barbie wings to his back. Kiddos hauled in a record loot that Halloween! (The pup is no longer with us - he crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Halloween).

We’re down to the last few pieces of candy so I may need to thaw the frozen Brussels sprouts for the late arriving teen crowd. This was the most kids in at least 5 years.

All is quiet now…I’m sending all this extra candy to school with my DH tomorrow!

We just turned off all the lights and blew out the jack o’lantern. This is after buying the Huuuuge Costco assortment (of course I did skim off the KitKats and Reeses to send to D20 (and I think H and S16 skimmed off some Snickers and Almond Joys.) I am happy because I would have eaten those Peanut M&Ms if they were in the house!

LOL OP. My ex did something similar 20 years ago when we were running low on candy and we were scrounging around for alternatives. We had a large bag of those baby potatoes and he offered kids a choice of candy … or a potato. We were shocked at how many kids picked the potato! And we had good candy! It was so funny. The funniest was a kid who said, “Why would I want a potato” in an outraged voice. My ex said, “I don’t know,” but after hemming and hawing, the kid picked the potato anyways.

I was worried that the parents would think we were weirdos.

@rhododendron you are my hero. I love that you have a heart for those afflicted with food allergies. You made that kid’s (and his worried parents’) night!!!
