kind of a desperate situation

Okay so the sparknotes version of my story is: I am a freshman Pharm D. student at Saint John’s University. SJU is quite pricey. I enrolled because I believed I would be receiving financial assistance from my mother for my tuition, but she ended up changing her mind. As a result, I’ve had to work A LOT to pay the difference, and my grades are awful.

My first semester gpa is around 1.76. This semester I am pulling up my grades a bit even though I am still working 30+ hours a week on top of classes.

My question is: Will I be able to get into SUNY Farmingdale, Laguardia or Queensborough to study nursing prerequisites?

My high school grades and SAT scores are great. I was accepted to St John’s University and NYU. I am normally a good student, I’ve just been really struggling in my personal life this year.

I’m concerned because I don’t have this semester’s grades on record so all the admissions offices will see is the 1.76 from last semester.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated; thank you so much if you can help! :)

Oh wow. So I looked around the forum and you guys are used to answering questions about Princeton and Harvard and med school admission.

I feel kind of embarrassed now about my post and the situation I’m in. I wish I could stay at SJU. I wish I could have attended NYU. I just don’t have the money. It’s really bad.

Yes, CC is pretty heavily weighted towards the highly selective schools, but don’t worry, we try to address all needs concerning college issues.

Your college grades could be a problem because I’m assuming you won’t be finished with second semester when admissions decisions are made, correct? If so, my advice would be to send a mid-term report to the schools you’re applying to even if they don’t require them. That will at least give them an indication that you are improving your grades. Also, is there a reason for your low grades first semester, illness, working too many hours to earn money for school, etc.? If you might want to indicate that subtly to the schools so that they understand why you have that dip in an otherwise strong academic record.

Best of luck!

Don’t worry about it all! Everyone has ups and downs in their lives even those who go to Harvard, Yale and med school, so you should not feel embarassed.
I’m no guidance counselor or anything, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Personally, I would explain your situation to the nursing schools and see what they say. Also try to ask an advisor at St. Johns and see what they think you should do, and talk to the aid dept. and explain your situation to them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself in a sticky situation that was solved through communicating with others.

Hope everything turns out okay!

I’m at a different NY community college so I’m not sure how competitive the nursing programs at Queensborough or Laguardia are, but at my school, lots of people start taking the prereq’s in advance of being accepted into the nursing program. If you did that, you could probably raise your GPA significantly.

I would contact those schools (& SUNY Farmingdale) directly though.
