He’s working in healthcare as a bioinformatician.

I think that he’s philosophically opposed to working for the financial industry. Probably something about wanting to build and discover things over pushing paper around. I wonder where he got that from.

There’s a surprising amount of demand for it.

Son has database, data mining and analytics skills - the data mining and analytics skils are useful in a wide variety of fields including marketing. Basically areas where you have a huge amount of data to sift through.

Despite being a business grad I actually haven’t gotten into personal trading at all. Seems like there’s a lot of bad information out there and there’s a sense of overwhelming dread that comes over me when I think of sifting through all the crackpottery.

A freind of mine uses the following approach: figure out what the crooks are doing and do the same thing. It’s a very cynical approach but it works for him.

I have a business degree too but I didn’t start trading until 40. I did invest in stocks and mutual funds starting around 30. I wish that I had started sooner though.

I don’t have much money and am not sure what to invest in… again, it comes back to the crackpottery. I’d love to learn but everyone says different things. It’s hard to look at how things will move going forward when historical data can only be so useful… don’t want to get sucked in by hindsight bias/data mining fallacies.

How much “disposable money” is an adequate minimum to get started? The answer varies of course – I am just asking for your opinion.

You should have several months of savings for emergencies before you start…unless your job is secure and you make a lot more than you need…

After that …you only need a 1,000 or 2,000 to get started.
There is no rush to get started, but you learn more by doing. Start with a small amount of money that you can afford to lose.

Expenses are high unfortunately (student loans, rent, etc) so I only have maybe 6 months of expenses saved up right now. Once I have maybe $2k to blow safely, I still wouldn’t honestly know the first thing about investing/trading properly. I’ve got a decent mathematical background but the actual ins and outs of knowing how to look for investment opportunities/how much invest/how to actually do the investing/how to determine expected returns/valuation is lost on me.

My savings account has such low interest that I can’t see how it’s really helping me.

Just went to cash. Up 16% for the year (was up about 18% last week). Key support on the $compq taken out (2,960) which was the run for the hills signal for me.

I don’t know about that move. Yes China is slowing, there are divergences in the Russell, the transports etc. However aapl which is a large percentage of the Nasdaq, dropped 3% in 7 minutes which sounds like a computer glitch or something.

I only saw it down $10 but a look at the daily indicates a bigger drop. My guess is that it traded to the lower channel trendline - probably not a lot to worry about for now if you’re LTBH.

The high rates will kill economy which is brely breathing anyway…or maybe it will die way before higher rates because of other high costs…economy has been really blessed with “positive” reinforcements in form of thousands of regulations, suffocated to the point that most companies are just afraid to hire another person. I know they just wnat to get the most out or working people, they are just exploiting all of us, they are evil …, shame on them, we shoudl have higher rates to make them pay much more for borrowing money, they deserve as high as possible, how about 30%, will this be good?

Well, we got our tension point and it resolved to the downside, pretty hard. Glad I bailed yesterday; looking to re-enter at the appropriate technical support levels.

BCE…,
We are on our second…can only hope for the best…Best to you too!
Cost of health care will kill more and other regulations will contribute…and guess where the killings occur in big international companies…yes, hitting home…

V-bottom trade in play right now. I’m remote and can’t play it. We’ll see what happens. So far this is just a pullback in a larger bullish trend.
