I’m leaving in a week to visit my S in Seoul. I would like to take him a Kindle as a Christmas present so I will not have to ship it later (avoid postage and customs). However, there are rumors of a Kindle 4 coming out shortly. Anybody know anything?

yes they are coming out with a new Kindle. I have heard it will have color, but can’t say I know much about it.

But, how about buying a refurbished 3G? I bought one for my son last year. Other than the packaging (plain brown box) the Kindle looked new.

[Amazon.com: Used and New: Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology](http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002FQJT3Q/ref=sr_1_3_olp?ie=UTF8&m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&s=generic&qid=1315930355&sr=1-3)

There are no strong rumors on a true Kindle 4 - as a successor to the current Kindle with E-ink.

However - it is highly anticipated that Amazon will be expanding the “Kindle” name into a line of products beyond beyond the e-ink eReader. That should begin with the launch of an entry level Kindle TABLET (with a backlit touchscreen, NOT E-Ink). It is unofficial and unconfirmed, but people in the industry expect it to launch in late November for the Holiday season. See: [Amazon’s Kindle Tablet Is Very Real. I’ve Seen It, Played With It. | TechCrunch](Amazon's Kindle Tablet Is Very Real.
This is likely to be a 7 inch Android based tablet, meant to slot under the iPad in the market and compete directly with the B&N Nook which sells for $250, the price point the Kindle Tablet is expected to hit as well.

Some believe that this will be followed in the Spring with a 10 inch full fledged Tablet with camera, etc, to compete directly with the iPad.

None of this will effect the E-Ink dedicated Kindle reader. I say if that’s what you want, go ahead and buy it now without waiting, as any concurrently released new generation of the device will be evolutionary and not revolutionary in nature. Besides, the new Kindle are next expected to hit the US market until holiday shopping season, so to obtain one then overseas in Korea may to tough - as there will be a lot of domestic demand. E-readers and tablet computers have a history of selling out quickly immediately following launch.

Wow, that is a really good deal. Unfortunately, I’ve left it a little late to mail order without overnight fees. I think if I just go to Staples and get the $114 Wifi version, he’ll be able to use it with our Amazon account and not have to worry about not getting some books as in another current thread.

Thanks, newccuser. I knew someone would have the latest info - that link was just what I was needing.
